SZA Honored with Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony: 'Beyond My Wildest Dreams'

SZA has another award — this time for her songwriters!

The 34-year-old singer received the Hal David Starlight Award at the 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 13, which recognizes her impact on the music industry through her original songwriting.

“I just surpassed all of my wildest dreams,” SZA said in her acceptance speech, later adding that the honor “basically validates” all aspects of her career, including her songwriting.

“I’m so grateful,” she said. – Thank you for receiving me.

“I swear, I’ll be like, ‘Oh, I wrote this and I wrote that,'” SZA said. “AND [people would] say ‘OK,’ especially if you’re a woman, especially if you’re a black woman. So to win this… It just means the world.”

Following her speech, SZA performed an acoustic rendition of “Snooze.” The award was presented to her by songwriter Nile Rodgers.

It’s the latest in a well-edited string of awards appearances for the “Good Days” singer: following the release of her globally successful album SOSshe collected three Grammys, four iHeartRadio Music Awards, four Board Music awards and a Brit Award — not to mention more than a dozen nominations.

SZA joins a company of past Hal David Starlight Award winners that include Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Ed Sheeran and Lil Nas X.

The gala dinner, which was held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York, saw several artists inducted into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame, including Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, producer and rapper Timbaland, and REM’s Mike Mills and Michael Stipe . .

The evening included performances and presentations by several other stars, including Missy Elliott, Jason Isbell, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban.

SZA will have a chance to add to her hefty trophy collection this summer, next at the 2024 BET Awards on June 30, where she’s nominated five times — including a nod for her role in “Rich Baby Daddy” with her ex and Hal David Starlight Award winner 2011. Drake.

On the heels of her SOS tour — which grossed $95.5 million and sold 674,000 tickets in 2023, according to Board — the “Snooze” singer performed at several festivals over the summer, including a spot as the headliner at the 2024 Governors Ball this past weekend. She’ll next perform in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Summerfest, before jumping across the pond to perform at the British Summer Time Hyde Park concert series in London.

Outside of the music industry, SZA is also set to make her first feature acting debut in the buddy comedy opposite Keke Palmer, produced by Issa Rae for TriStar Pictures.
