SZA Reveals She Had Breast Implants Removed Due to High Risk of Breast Cancer and ‘Painful’ Fibrosis (Exclusive)

SZA opens up about how her family history of breast cancer influenced her choice of plastic surgery.

The “Snooze” singer, 34, recently appeared on SHE MD podcast, hosted by former fashion designer and entrepreneur Mary Alice Haney and board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Thais Aliabadi, who is known for working with stars like Rihanna and Khloe Kardashian.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive look at the upcoming episode, SZA said her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and her aunt also had a mastectomy. She recalled learning that she had a 53% lifetime risk of developing the disease because of her family history.

The Grammy winner said she didn’t really understand the risk, so she wasn’t necessarily concerned until she tried to get breast implants and dealt with fibrosis — thickening and scarring of the connective tissue — in her breasts.

SZA appears to confirm plastic surgery rumors in new album lyrics

“When I got my breasts done, the doctor took out some of the fibrosis, but… there was so much fibrosis it was crazy,” she said on the show. “And he took it out. And so, when I came back, many worries disappeared.”

She added: “I like to see someone spiritual about it, especially the breast cancer situation and the marker before I got the biopsy results and all that, I talked to someone, because I thought I needed to understand what was going on in the higher realms… ”

SZA admitted that she should have seen Dr. Aliabadi before getting the implants due to her increased risk of breast cancer, but the singer “sneaked in and got it anyway.”

“I have markers in my breasts, like metal markers in my breasts for these fibroids, for these lumps or whatever, I shouldn’t be getting breast implants…” she explained.

The “Kill Bill” artist eventually ended up having her breast implants removed due to her fibrosis.

“So I basically put them on. They ended up hurting me,” she said. “I have too many scars because my breasts are too thick and I shouldn’t have implants. And so I ended up getting extra fibrosis like with the tissue, whatever, and I didn’t feel good and it was painful. So I took them out and now it’s just my tits.”
