SZA has only “Good Days” on her mind after the Grammys.
At Sunday’s awards show, SZA rushed the stage after her performance to accept the award for Best R&B Song for her song “Snooze.” During her acceptance speech, SZA’s shock and gratitude were on full display.
“It’s the culmination of everything. The moments leading up to it, even Lizzo and not understanding what’s going on and being lost. Then I saw her and I was like, ‘Oh.’ I understood what was going on,” SZA, 34, who partners with Mastercard for their Priceless Planet coalition, tells PEOPLE exclusively about the moment on stage.
She adds: “I was just very shocked and very confused and I was just trying not to miss my prize.”

Recounting moments backstage before, SZA says she was “sweetly” changing because she didn’t think any of her nomination categories were next.
“I said, ‘I think I’m going to go home now.’ And then while I was changing, someone said, ‘You have to hurry up and sit down,'” recounts the “Nobody Gets Me” singer. “Then a woman started yelling, ‘Run, run, run.’ So I thought they were running me to my seat because they were supposed to film me on camera or something, but they didn’t bring me to the seat. They took me to the stage.”
At the start of the night, SZA was the top nominated artist and nerves were fraying. Now that it’s over, all he feels is gratitude.
“I’m just grateful and relieved, mostly,” she says. “I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for a long time. So it’s good to get it out.”
To her surprise, she felt “peace” during the show, which she expected to be a “big, scary moment” in her head.
“I swear it was the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me before and I didn’t think I was going to survive it, but I can’t believe I did. And I think it’s a relief at all,” she says, adding that the highlight of her night was attending Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder.

“I’m sorry I ran out of breath because I was changing, so I shot up and ran over here,” she said as she ran onto the stage and greeted Lizzo, 35, who handed her the award with a big hug. “But Lizzo and I have been friends since 2013 when we both did a little RedBull tour together opening small rooms for like 100 people. And to be on stage with her is so amazing, I’m so grateful.”

She continued, “I’d like to thank my parents, my mom and dad, God, Top Dawg, Punch, all of TDE and my brothers and sisters in TDE, my godfathers, my niece.”
“I’m just… I’m sorry, I’m really devastated,” the singer said as she choked up. “You really don’t understand. I’ve come very, very far and I can’t believe this is happening and it seems very fake.”
Along with the “Kill Bill” performance, SZA debuted a new song, “Saturn,” from her upcoming album Flana, at the Grammy Awards in collaboration with Mastercard. The music video showcases SZA’s passion for sustainability and environmental protection
“Saturn” is about wanting and longing for things to be better on this planet, and we want to go somewhere else, but we can’t, so we have to find something worth saving here, says the singer, who wore a top made entirely of seeds for the music video.
Through cooperation with Mastercard, 100 million trees will be restored. Fans can participate by using their Mastercard to make purchases through Lyft and/or SiriusXM. When they do, the tree will be planted. Mastercard holders can also enter for a chance to win their own tree seed from SZA’s performance of “Saturn” by commenting “🌱” and tagging a friend on Mastercard’s post of SZA’s performance.
