SZA Says She Asked Her Best Friend to Raise a Baby with Her: 'Going to Force Her to Co-Parent' (Exclusive)

The singer spoke about whether she wants to become a mother

SZA shares her hopes of starting a family one day.

While appearing on SHE MD podcast, the “Kill Bill” singer, 34, revealed to hosts Dr. Thais Aliabadi and Mary Alice Haney that she approached the topic of foster care and co-parenting with her best friend.

“Well, I asked my best friend if she would do it with me. She said no,” SZA shared.

“Because we have too much on our plate. But I’m going to try to sweeten her. She’s the best to me, but she’s also the smartest person, so it’s like if we didn’t end up raising a kid together like through the lenses of management, I’m going to make her co-parent with me like my fake co-parent.”

SZA Says Her Emotional Grammys Speech Was ‘Climination of Everything’ (Exclusive)

SZA was previously in a relationship with her ex-fiancé for 11 years. She doesn’t often comment on her past relationship, but along the way she told a little about him.

In December, SZA did an interview with Zane Lowe in which she said that she started playing music because of her ex-fiancé, who was eight years older than her and helped her financially.

“[I] I actually got into music just to prove something,” she said. “When I started doing music, it was for my ex-fiancé, because he paid for everything. My food, my clothes, where I lived – and he was eight years older than me, so I was so dependent.”

In February, SZA won Best R&B Song at the 2024 Grammy Awards for her song “Snooze.” As she worked her way through her acceptance speech, it was clear the musician was surprised by her win.

“It’s the culmination of everything. The moments leading up to it, even Lizzo and not understanding what’s going on and being lost. Then I saw her and I was like, ‘Oh.’ I understood what was going on,” SZA told PEOPLE exclusively about the moment on stage.

I was very shocked and confused and I was just trying not to miss my prize, she added.
