News about Tait Fletcher

In the third season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2006, when he got into a heated argument with instructor Ken Shamrock about training, light heavyweight fighter Tait Fletcher was exposed to fight fans for the first time. In fact, Fletcher was part of the original New Mexico wrestling team founded by Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn, so he was familiar with the sport of mixed martial arts long before Ultimate Fighter.

Fletcher, a Michigan native who originally moved to Santa Fe to attend college, quickly fell in love with martial arts and traveled to Albuquerque to begin working with Jackson’s growing team.

This was before champions like Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre sought Jackson’s advice and pre-fight training. At that time, fighters only trained and competed because martial arts was something they were passionate about and fighting was inherent to them.

“People like me, Keith Jardine, Diego Sánchez and Carlos Condit were the ones who started things. The only thing going on at the time was the love of the game, Fletcher recently admitted on MMA’s Great Debate Radio. “(It’s not) like, ‘Oh look, this is how I’m going to support myself. You were pleased with yourself that you were able to perform your art form in front of people in a cage and really face your ego and fears.

When The Ultimate Fighter debuted on Spike TV in 2005, and Fletcher’s partner and friend Diego Sanchez not only joined the cast, but also won all of the middleweight competition by defeating Kenny Florian in the finals, the picture drastically changed.

At Jackson’s and many other MMA gyms, anonymity was no longer an issue. The sport expanded globally as more and more of the team’s fighters began moving up to The Ultimate Fighter and competing in the UFC. When Diego wins The Ultimate Fighter, Keith starts season two with Rashad (Evans) and I start season three, it all just “starts to happen,” according to Fletcher.

But unlike his teammates, Fletcher didn’t experience the same level of success in the UFC, soon finding himself on the outside looking in with the biggest promotions in the sport.
