An inquest was opened yesterday into the death of a 15-year-old at The Myle Cross Center in Lincoln.
The brief hearing was told that Samuel had injured himself during a match for Lincoln RFC U16s the previous day and was in need of first aid.
Coroner Wilkes said: “The next day Samuel was not feeling well, was ill and was not at school.
“They were monitoring him all day and we assumed he was sleeping.”
The teenager’s grandmother Rebecca later tried to wake him up and found he was “not breathing and sick”.
Emergency services were called to the home, but Samuel was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy was performed, and toxicology findings suggest that Samuel had high levels of drugs in his bloodstream when he died.
The investigation was postponed until March 26, 2025.
Paying tribute, Lincoln Rugby Club said: “It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we have to inform you of the passing of a young member of our rugby family, Sam Staple.
“Sam sadly passed away on Tuesday 24th September and we will all miss him dearly.
“Sam was funny, cheeky, larger than life and an incredibly special young man.”
They shared that Sam was “enthusiastic” about rugby and a “keen supporter of Stockport County FC and Wasps RFC”.
The club and Samuel’s family have established the Sam Staple Memorial Fund to create a lasting legacy in his honor.
