Luther’s Screen Rant: Fallen Sun Red Carpet

Screen Rant: Luther can’t rest. Most of his friends are dead and now he is in prison!

Neil Cross: One of the greatest ironies of this character is that I love him! I love John Luther. I know him like the back of my hand. I know his soul. I know what scares him. I know what he needs. I love the actor who plays him; I have known him for many years. Idris and I have been doing this for thirteen or fourteen years now. Yet somehow, while I love them both, all I do is find a way through them. I don’t know where it came from; that drive. I’m afraid to test it, but there you go.

Screen Rant: There have been rumors and rumors about a feature film since season three or so. Was this always that movie?

Neil Cross: I got the idea for this movie when I left the set of Season 5. It was a very cold day in the suburbs of London. Of course, we shot in a large abandoned industrial space, because that was obvious. That is our home.

Screen Rant: That’s where Luther used to hang out.

Neil Cross: That’s where Luther hangs out, what can I say? I went for a walk with Idris, got back into his trailer, and as always, we started talking about our next steps. Another season? Time to watch a movie? If we made a movie, what would it be? Idris opened the door of his trailer, and I said, “Oh my God! He’s breaking out of prison to solve a crime.” That’s the idea.

Screen Rant: When did you bring Jamie on board to direct? Is this season 5 momentum?

Neil Cross: Pretty much, yes. I’m really old fashioned, and I’m bored. But I have a motto, which is “always work with people you like”. As a filmmaker, I have great admiration for Jamie. He is an ambitious man. He’s even more British than I am. But he is very ambitious. He will not accept the impossible.

I’ve worked with him before, on a show called Doctor Who, and we’re fine with that, but season 5 of Luther is special. The energy between the three of us is really good. In my opinion, we have found the core team. It’s the three of us, and they’re going to take it to the next level.

Screen Rant: What do you think is the end for Luther? You know how this story will end, no matter how many years, how many movies, how many shows to be aired again?

Neil Cross: You know what? I figured they would stuff the unfinished Luther manuscript in my mourning bag before setting fire to my longboat!

Screen Rant: On a scale of one to ten, how great is Idris?

Neil Cross: A scale of one to ten is not even enough! The nice thing about Idris is that most people are great, it’s an influence. Most great people are aloof. Most great people don’t have time for you. None of these are actual portraits of Idris Elba. Although he is cool, he is very friendly and polite.

Screen Rant: Never, “Luther needs a spa day.” No, “Luther in jail!”

Idris Elba: Exactly! Undisclosed, but at the end of the TV show, Luther goes to prison. So at the beginning of the series, we start with the prison. I think it’s a real nod to fans of the original, but it’s also a great place to start a horror movie. Our detective has to solve the case, but what will he do in prison?

This movie has always been a dream for us, but it gave us a bigger playing field. I love Luther! I love the TV show “Luther”. I think we did our best. Now, we have a cinematic landscape. We can go to different worlds. We can get Luther out of London and take him somewhere else. Do you understand what I mean? Just tell the broader story.

Screen Rant: You’re basically Luther’s only surviving friend. Every time they call you, do you say, “I can’t believe I’m alive, this is the man you killed me!”

Dermot Crowley: I hope this isn’t where they kill me! [Laughs] No, it’s great to be alive for such a long time. A lot of my actors were killed. But I’m glad Schenk is there. His relationship with Luther was based on mutual respect and admiration for their intelligence, as well as a paternity between Schenk and Luther.

The funny thing is that when Schenk first walked in, he was tailing this guy and he wanted to recruit him! So it evolved in a different way, and I’m happy, yes.

Screen Rant: Luther has a reputation for going crazy, over-impressing the system, breaking the rules, and bending the rules. Do you think your personality is the only thing that keeps him from going too far?

Dermot Crowley: I totally think so. I am his anchor. Neil knows us so well that he writes to us. There is a very intimate private phone call segment in the movie when Schenk actually brings him down to earth and tells how frustrated he is with him. It’s very human, and in all of these amazing, breathtaking action sequences, we have it all. Very good!

Screen Rant: On a scale of one to ten, how cool is this guy Idris?

Dermot Crowley: I guess people should always save a little bit of his progress, but I’m saying 9.75.

Screen Rant: What’s your favorite Diana Ross song?

Andy Serkis: “I’m out!”

Screen Rant: Makes sense, why am I asking this if you’ve seen the movie! How cool is Idris Elba?

Andy Serkis: One in ten, 100%. No, he’s the best. No doubt. I mean, I give him a pretty close range, but he’s definitely number one. No, he’s super cool and talented as John Luther. He is very possessive of the character. He spent ten years and breathed ten years. To him, it was difficult to discern which was Luther and which was Idris.
