Tamron Hall Says She 'Understands' Why Hoda Kotb Is Leaving Today: 'Not Easy' (Exclusive)

Tamron Hall is proud of her former NBC co-star Hoda Kotb.

While I was talking to PEOPLE at the inauguration Food and wine Classic in Charleston, former co-host TodayThird Hour ‘s reacted to the news that Kotb, 60, is leaving his current role on the long-running morning show.

“Oh, you know what? I understand that. I know. I understand that very well. Being a mom — being a little bit of an older mom, you want to give your child, your family as much time and love as possible,” says Hall, 54, who is mother to son Moses, 5.

On September 26, Kotb announced that she would be leaving Today to spend more time with his family. She recently moved into a house in the suburbs with her daughters Haley (7) and Hope (4). He will remain in his current NBC roles until early 2025.

“I think it’s a beautiful decision that wasn’t easy to make, but I’m proud of it,” says Hall.

The Show in the Tamron Hall anchor left NBC on her own in February 2017, after NBC announced she was losing her post as co-anchor TodayMegyn Kelly is at 9 o’clock in the morning. (In 2019, Hall’s own daytime talk show premiered and is now in its sixth season.) Despite her shocking departure at the time, there’s no love lost among her former co-stars.

“I respect that decision and wish her and her adorable daughters nothing but the best,” says Hall, whose chef Self-confident cookdropped earlier this month.

Kotb wrote a letter to NBC staff on Sept. 26 before breaking the news of his departure on air.

“As I write this, my heart is all over the map,” she wrote. “I know I’m making the right decision, but it’s painful. And you’re all the reason why. They say two things can be right at the same time, and I feel that deeply right now. I love you and it’s time for me to leave the show.”

The reporter, who has been with NBC for 26 years, will remain at the network in some capacity.

“Happily and gratefully, I plan to remain a part of the NBC family, the longest business relationship I’ve had the good fortune to hold close to my heart,” she wrote in her letter.

Along with Savannah Guthrie, Kotb co-anchors NBC News Today and co-host Todayfourth hour with Jenna Bush Hager.
