While he was in college, he wrote a play called “Adde Kompa.” The play was deeply loved by the audience and won the first prize for the play. In the mid-1970s, he met Telugu actor Rallapalli, an acquaintance. With his help, Tanikeira began to create stage scenes and dialogues for the play. Later, on Lalapalli’s advice, he moved to Chennai. He then played the role of a 70-year-old man in the play Mugimpi Lai Katha written by Rallapalli. He came into limelight with this drama. Later, when Rallapalli’s theater company “Sri Murali Kalanilayam” needed a playwright, he invited Tanikella to work as playwright for him. He agreed and worked as a playwright for the troupe, creating 10 plays. One of his plays, Gograhanam, won the Sahitya Akademi Award. In addition to writing plays, he also participated in many plays. Some of his popular plays are Jambu Dweepam, Chal Chal Gurram, Naalugo Kothi, Kokkorokko and Gaardhabhaandam. He has also acted in many Telugu dramas including Gaardhabhanda, Grahamam Pattina Ratri, Sani Grahalu, Goyyi, Panjaram Lo Elaka and Hulakki.

The lyrics of his song are “Gappal goddaru gadde kodukulu .. nuvvundanga levantaru .. unnavo levo chevula jeppipora shabbashra Shankara” which means “Gappal is the son of a donkey, don’t wake up when you wake up! Whether you are Shabbash Ra Shankara or not , Zepipora to the ears.” Tanikela’s song received huge criticism. He later uploaded an apology video on his Facebook account. He said in the video,
I have nothing against anyone.. The video was posted with an unconditional apology. For the past few days, I have been posting on Facebook saying “Shabash Ra Shankara..” However..unfortunately, some of the comments have been seen as hurtful to some people’s minds..hurtful. I don’t want to explain it any further. Because no matter what you say, it’s like covering up.. I join hands and apologize unconditionally. Also deleted the post.. I don’t object if all rationalists..humanists miss out on this honor. Furthermore, no one has the right or authority to harm anyone. I would like to apologize again for this mistake… Hi everyone. “
