Tarek El Moussa Gets Candid About Using Injectables While Celebrating Turning 43

Tarek El Moussa is real when it comes to beauty treatments.

The Flipping the El Moussas star opened up about getting Botox while reflecting on her 43rd birthday in an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, August 28.

“Oh my god, I still can’t believe I’m 43!!! Big shout out to whoever created Botox!” he wrote in the caption, followed by three crying and laughing emojis. His post also included footage from a birthday trip he took with his wife, Selling Sunset alum Heather El Moussa.

“So… I celebrated my birthday in Tampa last weekend with my boss and amazing friends! The trip was the perfect combination of work and pleasure – just what we needed! From sunny adventures to unforgettable moments, it was a birthday to remember,” he writes.

She concludes the post by thanking her followers for “all the amazing birthday wishes” and adding, “I appreciate you all,” along with a red heart emoji.

Tarek can thank Dr. Alastair Carruthers and his wife, Dr. Jean Carruthers, for pioneering the cosmetic use of Botox (botulinum toxin).

Alastair, a dermatologist, and his wife, an ophthalmologist, discovered the toxin’s wrinkle-relaxing effects after Jean treated a patient’s uncontrollable blinking with a diluted botulinum toxin solution. After years of research by married doctors, BOTOX® was officially approved by the FDA for aesthetic use in 2002.

In addition to being honest about the cosmetic treatments he’s had, Tarek has been transparent with fans about the many medical issues he’s faced over the past decade.

In February 2024, the HGTV star took a deep dive into his past challenges, including steroid addiction, in his sweeping memoir, Turn your life around.

In the book, he opens the story of a series of painful episodes that he experienced in succession, including a diagnosis of thyroid cancer in 2013, followed by a diagnosis of testicular cancer shortly after.

He managed to beat both thanks to several surgeries and radioactive iodine therapy, but faced another challenge after suffering a “debilitating” back injury while playing golf.

During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in January, Tarek opened up about the “emotional roller coaster” of recounting those events and his recovery in the book.

“The most important conclusion is that everything is possible. Literally, anything is possible. You just have to start. “Most people never start,” he said. “Take that first step. Go for that first walk. . . Just start.”
