Tarek El Moussa Reveals He Lived in a Halfway House After Divorce From Christina Hall: ‘I Didn’t Trust Myself’

The HGTV star opened up about the dark period following his split with his ‘Flip or Flop’ co-star during an appearance on ‘The Jeff Fenster Show’ podcast

Tarek El Moussa opens up about one of the darkest periods in his life.

While appearing on Monday’s episode of The Jeff Fenster Show podcast, El Moussa, 42, had a vulnerable conversation with the host about the difficult situation he’s in since his public split with ex-wife Christina Hall in 2016.

“When my ex left me, I went to some mental health places,” El Moussa revealed during the episode. “I actually lived in a halfway house. This is the first time I’m sharing it.”

When Fenster asks why he decided to enter the house, the father of three says it’s because “I didn’t believe I’d be alone. That’s how bad I was.”

He continues: “The reason I ended up there was because I didn’t know where to go and I needed 24-hour care. It was pretty bad because I lost everything, it seemed like overnight.”

El Moussa says he’s going into detail about the events that brought him to this dark place in his upcoming memoir, Turn your life around (releases February 6), which details his past health problems and personal struggles – including his steroid addiction – as well as how he became a successful entrepreneur.

During the podcast, he adds that he hasn’t always been the “best husband” or father, but admits that he has “no excuses” for his past behavior. “I was going through a lot at the time, but my actions weren’t the best,” he admits.

El Moussa and Hall married in April 2009 after almost three years of dating. Seven years later, they announced their separation in December 2016 and finalized their divorce in January 2018. The couple have two children — daughter Taylor, 13, and son Brayden, 8.

A few months before they announced their separation, the former couple got into a gunfight at their home in Yorba Linda, California. Although officials said at the time that police responded to a “possibly suicidal man” with a gun, El Moussa later said he was never suicidal and that the gun was for protection against wildlife while hiking.

After the separation, both exes remarried and expanded their families. El Moussa married his current wife Heather Rae in July 2020, and the couple welcomed their first child together, a son named Tristan, in February 2023.

Hall married her third husband Josh Hall in secret in 2022 after less than a year of dating. She also has a 4-year-old son named Hudson from her second marriage to Ant Anstead, which ended in September 2020.
