Tate Holtzman Obituary, Death:- It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Tate Holtzman, a 23-year-old man from Jeffersonville, Vermont, who was killed in a car accident on July 10, 2023. Tate was a beloved son, brother, friend and colleague who touched many lives with his kindness, generosity and humor. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The Accident
According to the Vermont State Police, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Route 15 near the intersection with Route 108 in Cambridge. Tate was driving a 2019 Toyota Corolla eastbound when he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a 2020 Ford F-150 truck driven by a 45-year-old man from Johnson. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police suspect that speed and alcohol may have been factors.

Tate was born on March 15, 2000 in Burlington, Vermont, to John and Lisa Holtzman. He grew up in Jeffersonville, a village in the town of Cambridge, where he attended Cambridge Elementary School and Lamoille Union High School. He graduated in 2018 with honors and was involved in various sports and extracurricular activities, such as soccer, basketball, chess club and drama club. He was also an avid reader and writer who enjoyed poetry and fiction.
Tate went on to study journalism at the University of Vermont, where he excelled academically and socially. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and the editor-in-chief of the Vermont Cynic, the student newspaper. He also interned at the Burlington Free Press and the New York Times Magazine, where he wrote several articles on topics ranging from politics to culture to sports. He was passionate about his career and had a bright future ahead of him.
Tate was a loving and loyal person who cherished his family and friends. He had a warm and friendly personality that made him easy to talk to and fun to be around. He had a great sense of humor and could always make people laugh with his witty jokes and stories. He was also generous and compassionate, always willing to help others in need. He volunteered at various local organizations, such as the Jeffersonville Food Shelf, the Lamoille County Animal Shelter and the Smugglers’ Notch Distillery.
Tate loved traveling and exploring new places. He had visited many countries in Europe, Asia and South America, where he learned about different cultures and languages. Tate is survived by his parents John and Lisa Holtzman of Jeffersonville; his sister Emma Holtzman of Boston; his grandparents Robert and Mary Holtzman of Stowe and James and Susan Smith of Montpelier; his uncles David Holtzman of Waterbury and Mark Smith of Burlington; his aunt Sarah Smith of Rutland; his cousins Jake Holtzman of Denver, Lily Holtzman of New York City, Matt Smith of Portland and Amy Smith of Seattle; his girlfriend Hannah Green of Burlington; his best friend Alex Brown of Jeffersonville; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Arrangements
A celebration of Tate’s life will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cambridge Community Church, located at 15 Church Street in Jeffersonville. The Reverend Michael Jones will officiate. A reception will follow at the Smugglers’ Notch Inn, located at 55 Church Street in Jeffersonville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tate’s memory to the Vermont Cynic Scholarship Fund, which supports aspiring student journalists at the University of Vermont.
