Tate McRae is officially Britney Spears’ number one fashion fan.
The 21-year-old Canadian pop star arrived at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, September 11 in a high-neck, long-sleeve black lace mini dress by Roberto Cavalli that instantly reminded Spears fans of a look the singer wore in 2001.
Beneath the see-through ensemble, McRae wore a black bra and panties (unlike Spears who rocked a short boy, McRae wore a high-cut bikini). She paired the sexy outfit with black sandals.
McRae styled her long blonde hair into loose waves thanks to celebrity hairstylist Chad Wood, who used TRESemmé’s Extra Hold Mousse to achieve the look. McRae’s smoky makeup look was created using Stila Cosmetics products.

The singer’s Cavalli look was clearly inspired by Britney Spears’ navy version at the 2001 MTV VMAs — an event when she appeared on stage with a massive yellow snake around her shoulders.
Partly because of her impressive choreography during the performance (McRae started out in a dance competition show So you think you can dance), McRae is often compared to Spears, 42.
Speaking to PEOPLE in 2023, McRae said the comparison is “obviously an honor.” “I mean, Britney is the queen. People will compare newer artists to things that happened in the past, so obviously it’s really cool to hear comments like that,” she continued.
At the time, McRae also shared that her music video for “Exes” was inspired by “the greats, like Britney and Christina [Aguilera].”

McRae is nominated for two awards at this year’s VMAs; best pop (up against Camila Cabello, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift) and best choreography for her music video for “Greedy” with choreographer Sean Bankhead.

The singer made her debut at the 2020 VMAs when she was nominated for Best New Artist (Doja Cat took home the award). Her second studio album, Think laterwas released in 2023 and contains the singles “Greedy” and “Exes”.
After months of dating rumors, McRae and The Kid singer LAROI made their relationship official on Instagram in July 2024. In August, LAROI, 21, joined the star on stage for a duet during a Madison Square Garden stop on her Think Later Tour.

The 2024 VMAs are hosted by Megan Thee Stallion. The “Mamushi” rapper is nominated for five awards including best collaboration for “Wanna Be” with GloRilla, as well as best hip-hop, best visual effects, best direction and best art direction for “Boa.”
During the show at the UBS Arena, spectators can watch the performances of Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla and Rau Alejandro. All but Cabello, who returns for a third performance from her latest studio album, C, XOXOwill debut on the main stage.
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Wednesday, September 11 at 8:00 PM ET/PT.
