Taylor Swift and Poet Emily Dickinson Are Related, Ancestry Reveals

Taylor Swift has a very famous poet in her bloodline.

According to TODAY, genealogy company Ancestry revealed that the “Karma” singer, 34, is related to Emily Dickinson and that the two are sixth cousins, three times removed.

“Swift and Dickinson are both descended from a 17th century English immigrant (Swift’s 9th great-grandfather and Dickinson’s 6th great-grandfather who was an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut),” Ancestry shared with TODAY on Monday.

“Taylor Swift’s ancestors remained in Connecticut for six generations until her side of the family eventually settled in northwestern Pennsylvania, where they married into the Swift family line.”

Swift’s upcoming album, which is called Department for tortured poetsit should be released on April 19.

In 2022, Swift referenced the 19th-century poet while accepting the Songwriter-Artist of the Decade award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

“If my text sounds like a letter written by great-grandmother Emily Dickinson while sewing a lace curtain, then I’m writing in the Quill genre,” she said on stage.

Swifties have too it was speculated that Swift’s ninth studio album Forever is inspired by Dickinson.

In addition to being released on December 10, 2020 — the same day as Dickinson’s birthday — the record’s title also references the last line of Dickinson’s “One Sister have I in Our House.”

The last line reads: “From out the wide night’s numbers — Sue forevermore!”

Swift announced first Department for tortured poets during her acceptance speech at the 2024 Grammy Awards last month when she won best pop vocal album for her album 2022. Midnight.

She added: “It’s called Department for tortured poets. I’m going to post the cover right backstage. Thank you. I love you. Thank you.”

Since then, the pop superstar has announced several versions of her new album, with the musician unveiling the fourth and final version at her Eras Tour performance in Singapore on Sunday. The bonus track for the final release is called “The Black Dog”.
