Taylor Swift Says She Is ‘Devastated’ After Fan Dies Shortly Before Brazil Eras Tour Show

Taylor Swift is speaking out following the tragedy that occurred at her final Eras Tour performance.

The singer, 33, shared a handwritten message on her Instagram Story on Friday, saying she was “heartbroken” by the death of a fan ahead of her concert at the Estadio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

One of the organizers of the event, Time for Fun, announced ua publish shared on X, formerly Twitter, that the deceased fan was 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado. In the post, written in Portuguese, they said Benevides Machado was unwell at the scene and was treated by emergency services before being taken to Salagdo Filho Hospital, where she died.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but I’m heartbroken to say that we lost a fan tonight before my performance,” Swift began her statement on social media.

“I can’t even tell you how devastated I was,” she continued. “I have very little information other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and too young.”

Swift, who played the first of three shows at the Estadio Nilton Santos on Friday, added that she would not be able to talk about the death of a fan during the show because of the “sadness” she felt.

“I won’t be able to talk about this from the stage because I feel overwhelmed with grief when I even try to talk about it,” she wrote. “I want to say that I feel this loss deeply now and my heart goes out to my family and friends.”

“This is the last thing I thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” Swift concluded her heartfelt message.

Thiago Fernandes, a friend of Benevides, told a local newspaper Fohla De S. Paulo“I want Ana to appear on the screens in Taylor’s show.”

He also posted a tribute to his friend on Instagram on Friday. A translation of his post, written in Portuguese, reads in part: “I just can’t believe yours [sic] gone I can’t accept it. We’ve talked so many times about this show and how I wish I was with you.”

Fan video taken and shared on X earlier in the night from the show showed Swift pausing her performance to ask for water to be brought to fans.

“There are people who need water, right here,” Swift said as she stood and pointed to a section of the audience where fans were waving empty water bottles in the air. “So whoever is in charge of giving it to them, let them come and make sure it happens.”

Photography published on X she displayed an impressive projection – a white shirt with symbols found in Swift’s songs, including a scarf, which appeared to refer to her Red hit “All Too Well” and the bow and arrow, which seemed to be pointing at her Lover the song “Sagittarius”. The projection also included the names of Brazilian states.

IN video posted on Xwhich was translated from Portuguese to English, Mayor Eduardo Paes said a projection would be shown on the statue on Thursday, comparing Swift’s presence in Brazil to that of Michael Jackson and Madonna.

“We’re going to properly honor Taylor Swift and her arrival in Carioca territory tonight,” he said in the video, adding, “Welcome, Taylor Swift.”
