For the past 6 months, we’ve carefully decoded Taylor Swift’s style of play. Whether she’s showing up in a plush Stella McCartney coat, wearing sentimental jewelry or wearing boyfriend Travis Kelce’s number on a puffer, Swift has brought WAG dressing to the forefront of pop culture.
But in all this research, one thing stumped us: the secret behind her smudge-proof red lips. Surfing, chicken fingers (with “apparently” ranch dip!) and a few pink drinks survived. But on Sunday, she put it to the ultimate test.
After the Kansas City Chiefs AFC Championship win against the Baltimore Ravens, Swift shared a passionate kiss on the court with Kelce. Once again, her red lip color didn’t smudge, let alone budge. Not only did her lips remain flawless, but his chin also dawned sans lipstick.
What kind of beauty sorcery is at play here? We have our own theories which we have listed below.
Theory 1: The powder trick
In an interview with S. in 2011 Allure (excavated by Elana Fishman on Page Six), Swift revealed the pro tip she’s picked up for keeping her red lip color.
“There are tricks I learned from the make-up artist on set. They put on red lipstick, then absorb it with a tissue, then put powder on the tissue and somehow press it on the lips. Then log in again,” she said at the time. “It turns it into a stain that lasts much longer.”
Does Swift work as her own makeup artist and create the perfect smudge-proof soul? This woman caused quite a stir on the tour, so it is possible that she has discovered the secret of eternal lip color.

Theory 2: It’s Mother McGrath, baby!
It’s very likely that Swift has a large number of red lipsticks in her rotation. Top of her list: Pat McGrath’s best-selling Labs MatteTrance lipstick in the shade Elson.
According to the brand, the shade is “a creamy, smudge-proof formula that’s flexible on the lips and stays on all night.” But does “all night” also include a moment of make-up? Even the best lipsticks struggle to stay strong when faced with another set of lips.

Another recent Swift favorite is Pat McGrath Labs LiquiLUST Legendary Wear Lipstick in ELSON 4 — the same one she wore in the “Bejeweled” music video and at the 2022 MTV VMAs.
Swift’s brand loyalty led McGrath to create a ‘Taylor-Made Midnights muse majoring with TS’ lip duo featuring a lipstick and liner inspired by the star’s styles.

Theory 3: She is superhuman
If Swift attends the Super Bowl on February 11 (which is possible despite her concert in Tokyo the night before), it would be her 13th (!) Chiefs Game. For those who don’t speak Swiftie, 13 is a Grammy winner’s lucky number. Aside from her birthday (Dec. 13), Swift noted that her first album went gold in 13 weeks, and her first No. 1 song had a 13-second intro. And these are just a few examples.
Another proof that the stars align and that the girl is math, is math:
The Super Bowl is 2/11 and 2 + 11 = 13.
It also happens to be Super Bowl 58. And 5 + 8 = (now all together!) 13.
Basically, it’s a Swift simulation and we all live in it.
