Team USA Finishes 2024 Paris Olympics with Most Medals of Any Country with 126 — Plus 40 Golds!

Team USA is leaving the 2024 Paris Olympics with a ton of extra hardware.

Just as they did at the 2020 Tokyo Games, American athletes took home more medals than any other country, ending the Games on Sunday, August 11 with 126 medals.

Of those medals, 40 are gold, tying the US national team with China for the number of gold medals. China is behind the USA with a total of 91 medals, and Great Britain is third with 65 medals. Although they were third in the number of medals for almost the entire Games, the home country France fell behind on home soil, narrowly coming in fourth place with 64 medals.

Team USA entered the final day of competition one gold medal behind China, but eventually pulled even thanks to Jennifer Valente’s first-place finish from track cycling and the women’s basketball team.

The athletes — who also brought home 44 silver medals and 42 bronze — surpassed Tokyo’s total of 113 medals and earned the most for the country since the 1984 Los Angeles Games, when Team USA won 174 medals, according to NBC New York.

The US women were dominant — thanks to incredible performances from Simone Biles, the women’s soccer team, Sha’Carri Richardson and more, they won 65% of the country’s medals.

Of the more than three dozen American gold medals, the most won by the athletics team, which was in first place as many as 14 times. Those gold medalists include Noah Lyles, Gabby Thomas and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Swimming also performed well, bringing home eight gold medals thanks to stars like Katie Ledecky, who was Team USA’s flag bearer alongside rower Nick Mead at the closing ceremony.

The Games saw some triumphs, such as Biles’ successful return to gymnastics, Ledecky’s record-breaking swim and the first gold in men’s rowing in more than 60 years. But the Games were also not without controversy, including the decision to strip gymnast Jordan Chiles of her floor bronze medal.

Next up, Team USA will be on home soil as they host their competitors in Los Angeles in 2028.
