In their final training session as AFC Richmond coach, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and Beard (Brendan Hunt) ) tries to appear cold, insisting on a regular routine without any special recognition. But of course, the players have a completely different mindset.
At the end of practice, the team sang a choreographed song, bit by bit leaving the field as they said goodbye to their dear American manager. And to match a self-proclaimed music lover like Ted, they chose an iconic track from “The Sound of Music”. A song called “So Long, Farewell” also names the episode. In both the 1959 Broadway musical and the more popular 1965 film adaptation, it was performed by Von Trapp kids, who recited every line before rushing off to bed.
Of course, “Ted Lasso” puts his role on a famous figure. Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández) ends the song, adding an additional “adios” or two at the beginning of all the other language goodbyes in the original text. And then there’s the celebration after Ted agrees — a primal display of football fanaticism that will remind people what show they’re actually watching.
AFC Richmond’s heartfelt performance of “So Long, Farewell” is a perfect fit for a show that combines the excitement of sport with the emotions of classic storytelling. Rom-coms and Broadway plays have always been a big inspiration for “Ted Lasso,” so much so that the show itself can’t help but draw attention to that fact time and time again.
The “Sound of Music” homage is also related to “Ted Lasso” Season 2, as the group learns a routine choreographed for NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye.” The two scenes mirror each other perfectly, right up to Will, the auto mechanic (Charlie Hiscock) holding a megaphone over his head and swaying gently to the music. That speaker was a lot bigger in the Season 3 finale “Ted Lasso,” representing how the entire club has become bigger and more successful. However, the excitement of the players performing the dances was equally explosive on both occasions. Ultimately, “Ted Lasso” is a series about how elements of traditional masculinity can and should coexist with emotional sensitivity, vulnerability, and openness. What better microcosm of that dichotomy than cheering on a Broadway dance as if it were a game-defining penalty?
Since Beard ended up staying in England, the song is really just saying goodbye to Ted. But hey, after all he’s done, he himself deserves the honor.
