Mellencamp said during Uncut diamonds podcast that she and Arroyave, 47, both take turns leaving the house “when the other one comes in and is asleep.” She added that she stays at Kyle Richards’ home when Arroyave stays with their children.

However, the television personality insisted that there was no ill will between her and Arroyave, adding that “they can both be there like at sporting events.” She explained: “It’s not like we can’t. We’re completely happy to be by each other’s side.”

Mellencamp also reflected on how the divorce of her parents, John Mellencamp and Victoria Granucci, is shaping the way she wants to deal with her own divorce. “There was so much backbiting,” she said of her parents, who married in 1981 and divorced in 1989. “It was also about pleasing them.”

She added that even 35 years after their divorce, she still tells her parents, “Please don’t call me by another person’s name,” before noting that the couple don’t use labels as a “compliment.”

“There’s a level of like, should I feel ashamed to be a part of my parents?” Adding that “whenever they were screwing each other, I’d say, ‘You guys decided to get married and have kids.'”

Mellencamp added that she and her siblings were aware of their parents’ “unhappy” mood because “we weren’t stupid.” As a result, she “doesn’t stress” her own mood during the divorce because “kids are very smart” and aware of their parents’ mindsets.

The day before the announcement, Mellencamp filed for divorce. According to a court filing obtained by PEOPLE at the time, Mellencamp set the separation date as Oct. 20 and asked for spousal support and primary legal and physical custody of their three children with “reasonable and frequent” visitation from Arroyave, with him being responsible for all attorneys’ fees and costs.

A week after her filing, Arroyave responded to her request and asked the court to grant the former couple joint custody and block Mellencamp’s ability to receive spousal support, but grant him the same support. He further cited their prenuptial agreement, saying, “The parties’ prenuptial agreement sets forth terms relating to the amount and duration of spousal support to be paid.”
