The girls were allegedly attacked in the area around Bournemouth Oceanarium and police were called at 8.40pm.

They are now being assisted by specially trained officers as the investigation into the alleged attack continues.

A 24-year-old man from Bournemouth was arrested for the alleged attack.

He is charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving one victim and one count of sexual assault involving another victim.

He is due to appear at Poole Magistrates’ Court today, Dorset Police said.

Detective Inspector Mark Fursman said: “This remains an extensive and ongoing investigation.

“I am appealing to anyone with information that could help our inquiries to come forward.

“I would ask anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Oceanarium area on Sunday night to come forward.

“I would also like to invite anyone who took any footage or pictures from the beach that night.

“Please review the footage to see if they recorded anything that could assist our investigation.

“We fully understand that reports of this nature can cause concern for our local communities.

“I would like to assure the citizens that there will be an increased police presence in the vicinity.

“Citizens can contact officials with any information or problems.

“We will also be working again with our partners to ensure a visible presence in the beach and waterfront area heading into summer.”

DI Fursman added: “This was a swift and thorough investigation.

“We consulted with the Crown Prosecution Service, who approved the charges.

“That matter is now the subject of court proceedings and it would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this stage.

“It is vitally important that the court process is allowed to take its course and I would remind the public.

“There should be no comments or sharing of information online or on social media that could potentially prejudice this proceeding.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting incident number 55240074793.
