Tejashwi Yadav is an Indian politician from Bihar. He is the youngest of nine children of Indian politician Lalu Yadav.

Tejashwi Yadav was born on Thursday, November 9, 1989 (34 years old in 2023) in Gopalganj, Bihar. His full name is Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. He is also known as Tarun. His star sign is Sagittarius. Tejashwi did his initial years of schooling in Patna and then went to Delhi for further studies. He studied at Delhi Public School, Hemant Vihar till Grade 5 and then at DPS, RK Puram till Grade 8. Although Tejashwi’s academic performance was average, he always topped the list in sports and extracurricular activities. He developed an interest in cricket at a very young age. He was a part of the school cricket team and represented the team in various tournaments. Cricket enthusiast Tejashwi Yadav dropped out of school midway through Grade 9 and started playing cricket full-time. Since then, he has represented the Delhi state cricket team in various tournaments and also represented Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy season. After failing to achieve success in cricket, Tejashwi Yadav gave up the sport and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and enter politics.

Tejashwi Yadav is the son of Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi. His parents were the Chief Ministers of Bihar for about 15 years. He is the youngest of Lalu Yadav’s nine children. He has an elder brother, Tej Pratap Yadav (politician), and seven sisters, Misa Bharti (politician), Rohini Acharya, Chanda Singh, Ragini Yadav, Hema Yadav, Anushka Rao and Raj Laxmi.

Cricket career

While playing for the Delhi Under-19 team, Tejashwi was signed by Delhi Dadvil FC ahead of the 2009 Indian Premier League. He was a member of the Delhi Dadvil FC for four seasons from 2009 to 2012; however, he did not get a single match in the four seasons of the Indian Premier League.

He represented Jharkhand in several domestic cricket tournaments, including the 2009 Ranji Trophy, the 2009 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the 2010 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the seven domestic matches that Tejashwi played throughout his cricket career, he scored only 37 runs and took one wicket. On 16 February 2010, Tejashwi played his last professional cricket match, in a match between Jharkhand and Tripura in Cuttack.

Political career

Politics was probably Tejashwi’s next choice after he realized that his chances of success in cricket were slim. He made his public speaking debut in 2010, campaigning for the RJD ahead of the 2010 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. In the 2015 Bihar Assembly elections, the 26-year-old Tejashwi successfully contested and won from the first constituency of Raghopur constituency. His party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), won 81 seats and formed an alliance with Janata Dal (United), which had a total of 70 seats. After the formation of the RJD-JDU coalition government in Bihar in 2015, Tejashwi Yadav was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.

In 2017, the CBI indicted Tejashwi Yadav and his family members, including father Lalu Yada and mother Rabri Devi, in the ‘land for hotel’ scam. The case led to the fall of the RJD-JDU coalition government in 2017, with the JD(U) withdrawing its support from the RJD and forming a new government with the BJP in Bihar. Tejashwi was the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar from November 2015 to July 2017. He accused the BJP government at the Centre of playing revenge politics by dragging his name into the 2004 corruption case. In an interview, he refuted the allegations against him and said,

They brought up a case from 2004 against me. How could I be a criminal when I was 13 or 14? I didn’t even have a beard!”

At the age of 27, Tejashwi Yadav became the youngest leader of the opposition in India. He went on to serve as the leader of the opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2020. In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Tejashwi Yadav won the Raghupur assembly seat in Bihar by a margin of 38,000 votes. His party, the RJD, emerged as the largest party in the state; however, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power by winning a majority of seats. On August 10, 2022, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar for the second time.

  • On New Year’s Eve 2008, Tejashwi Yadav and his brother Tej Pratap Yadav were beaten up by some anonymous men for molesting a girl at a party in Delhi.
  • On April 16, 2017, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a case against Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu Yadav and Rabri Yadav, accusing them of corruption in awarding the maintenance contract of two IRCTC hotels to a private company. The charges they faced included criminal conspiracy (120-B), cheating (420) and corruption under the Indian Penal Code. Later, a Delhi court granted bail to all three.
  • On October 5, 2020, Tejashwi Yadav, his brother Tej Pratap Yadav and four others were accused of murdering former RJD leader Shakti Mallik and an FIR was filed against them.
  • According to data shared by open data storage platform My Neta, Tejashwi faces a total of 11 criminal cases but has not been convicted in any of them.
  • In 2023, Tejashwi was sued for defamation for calling Gujaratis “thugs”. On February 12, 2024, Tejashwi submitted an apology to the court and retracted the statement he made in the press conference, and the Supreme Court of India dropped the case.
  • On March 11, 2023, the CBI summoned him for questioning in the ‘land for jobs’ case. This is the second time the agency has summoned him in the case; previously, he was summoned by the agency on February 4, 2023. According to the CBI, there were irregularities in the appointment of Group D posts in different zones of the Indian Railways between 2004 and 2009, and the posts were allotted to unknown civil servants in exchange for land. On July 3, 2023, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case in a Delhi court against Tejashwi, his parents Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi, and 14 others. The case involves the ‘land for jobs scam’.
  • In June 2024, his name emerged in the NEET-UG 2024 paper leak after Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha claimed that Tejashwi’s aide Preetam Kumar was involved in the alleged paper leak.

  • While serving as Bihar’s road construction minister, Tejashwi launched a WhatsApp number where the public could file complaints about damage to local roads. An executive engineer who monitors WhatsApp messages said the number received 47,000 messages, of which 44,000 were from girls proposing to Tejashwi Yadav.
