The statistics, compiled by The Sunday Times, cover local crime rates, Ofsted school reports and GP waiting times.
And the boffins also considered the number of listed buildings, parks and community assets such as sports clubs.
At the bottom of the list – ranked as the worst place to live in Britain – is Rushmoor in Hampshire.
Rushmoor has some of the worst NHS waiting times in the country and lacks many social resources.
But the area is boosted in part by its schools, which are ranked 35th best in the country.
Second place goes to Basildon in Essex, which The Economist last year described as “Britain’s most typical place”.
Basildon also has long NHS waiting times and has relatively few community assets or listed buildings.
They are followed by Dudley in the West Midlands and Castle Point just outside Basildon in south Essex.

Experts named Richmond in south-west London the best place to live in Britain, followed by Cheltenham in Gloucestershire.
According to the study, Richmond has great schools, 80 percent GP satisfaction and the lowest crime rate in London.
It comes with a hefty price tag, however, only those who can afford the average house price of £748,000 can buy in the area.
Stroud came third at the top, closely followed by London’s Merton and Lancashire’s Ribble Valley district.
The Ribble Valley’ was ranked fifth, thanks to excellent public services and the second lowest crime rate in the country.
