Texas Student, 15, Who Died After Being Hit by Semi-Truck While Getting off School Bus Identified by Family

A teenager who was killed by a semi truck while getting off a school bus in Livingston, Texas on Thursday has been identified by his family.

The 15-year-old student was identified as Eduardo Romero Flores by Alejandra Posada and Yared Banda, who started a GoFundMe fundraiser to raise money for his funeral expenses.

“On 12/7/23, our 15-year-old brother, Eduardo Romero Flores, was hit and killed by an 18-wheeler while getting off the school bus in front of our house. His sudden death has shaken and broken our family,” reads the description of the fundraising campaign. “Eduardo was a happy boy who had many dreams and aspirations and we will all miss him very much.”

“We appreciate all your support and prayers at this difficult time for our families,” it concluded. “Thank you and God bless you all.”

Romero Flores’ family did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

The driver of the semi truck that struck the teenager outside his home has been identified as 41-year-old Gregory Jackson, NBC affiliate KPRC reported.

Jackson has been charged with felony negligent homicide and is currently being held at the Polk County Jail in Livingston, according to jail records reviewed by PEOPLE.

His bail was set at $250,000.

Romero Flores, a freshman in the Livingston Independent School District, had just gotten off a district bus on U.S. Route 59 Thursday afternoon when the fatal crash occurred, according to publish created by the Texas Department of Public Safety on X (formerly Twitter).

Officials said the school bus was stopped when the 18-wheeler rear-ended a Toyota behind the bus and veered into the driveway of Romero Flores, where he was exiting the vehicle, ABC affiliate KTRK-TV and KHOU reported -TV, CBS affiliate.

He died at the scene of the accident.

Neither Jackson (the truck driver) nor the driver of the Toyota were injured in the crash, another ABC affiliate, KTRE, reported.

Police said the flashing red sign on the county vehicle was not off when the crash occurred, according to KHOU-TV and Fort Worth Star Telegram.

The Livingston Independent School District released a statement following the death of Romero Flores.

“Our district has lost a member of its family,” begins the statement obtained by KPRC. “In moments like these, we are reminded how precious life can be and how fragile every life truly is. It is sad when our district loses a member of its family. It is even more tragic when such a young life is taken from us. We extend our thoughts and sincere condolences to the family and friends.”

In its statement, the district also said it will provide counselors to “listen to and help any student who needs help.”

Livingston Independent School District and the Texas Department of Safety did not respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
