The Bear's Jon Bernthal Wins His First Emmy for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

Cheers to the newest guest star in a comedy series!

On Sunday, September 8, Jon Bernthal won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys for his role in Bear.

The actor, who was not at the ceremony, beat his colleague Bear guest stars Bob Odenkirk and Will Poulter, as well as Matthew Broderick (Just the murders in the building), Ryan Gosling (Saturday night live) and Christopher Lloyd (Hacks) take home the honor.

Bernthal first appeared as Mikey Berzatto in the show’s first season Bear. The 47-year-old actor then appeared in the sixth episode of season two, titled “Fish,” which documented the Berzatto family’s chaotic holiday gathering. The episode also featured Jamie Lee Curtis, who also took home the award for guest actress in a comedy series on Sunday night for her portrayal of Donna Berzatto, Mikey’s mom.

In August, Bernthal opened up about playing the role in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I understood what [creator] Chris Storer needed this big, charismatic guy from that version of Mikey,” he explained. “In the way we sometimes glorify and romanticize the people we’ve lost, we want to see a version of him — his winning smile and ability to take over a room with his energy.”

“When Season 2 came around and I actually got to go to Chicago and be part of the set, I saw that we needed another side of Mikey,” he continued. “We needed to see the damage and the ugliness, to see him in a spiral. It was such a cool exercise for me as an actor to be able to put those buoys in the water about who he is and why he resonates with his family like that, even though he could be really ugly at times.”

Broderick, 62, joined an illustrious group of guest stars when he joined Only murders in the building, playing a heightened version of himself.

Showrunner John Hoffman told The Wrap that he had no hesitation in bringing Broderick to the hit Hulu series.

“I’ve known Matthew for many years and it’s obvious that he’s a natural for this show. It’s just pure killer comedy coming in this way that only he can do,” he said. “I have to say that the writers who write these mean Ferris Bueller jokes and him rolling with it, it’s nice to see them all jumping and stepping and dancing together.”

“He’s very knowledgeable and funny,” Hoffman added of Broderick. “So he quickly recognized the satisfaction of being able to play directly on both his personality and his career in that way.”

The legendary actor, 85, previously revealed he was worried about fitting in with the cast, which also includes Jean Smart.

“It’s such an amazing cast that I felt a little intimidated, you know, I really do,” he told the Gold Derby in August. “Just coming with them and the artists they are, the professionalism they show – fitting in was a concern. I wanted to convey their energy, get into the energy of the play and contribute.”
