In 2022, Mia Goth dominated the horror film scene with star-making performances in the A24 slashers X and Pearl (her upcoming MaXXXine will close out the X trilogy), but the British actress has killed it again with her turn in 2023’s Infinity Pool. Also starring Alexander Skarsgård and Cleopatra Coleman, Brandon Cronenberg’s sci-fi horror flick follows newlyweds (Skarsgård and Goth) on vacation in the fictional country La Tolqa, where violence and terror drive its culture.

Winning the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2022 (yet the shining moment was notoriously robbed by something else), The Roots drummer Questlove made his directorial debut with Summer of Soul, which follows 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival by using all but forgotten concert footage cut with new interviews of performers and attendees. The critically-acclaimed film aims to “restore its history,” considering the massive fête hosted legendary performers such as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson, among others, over six Sundays that summer — but was widely overshadowed in the news by Woodstock, which was happening about 100 miles away on one overlapping weekend.

In this 2021 coming-of-age comedy, an overprotected teen has sex for the first time once her mom leaves town and recruits her best friend for a road trip adventure to the nearest Planned Parenthood for the titular emergency contraceptive.
