Winning the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2022 (yet the shining moment was notoriously robbed by something else), The Roots drummer Questlove made his directorial debut with Summer of Soul, which follows 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival by using all but forgotten concert footage cut with new interviews of performers and attendees. The critically-acclaimed film aims to “restore its history,” considering the massive fête hosted legendary performers such as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson, among others, over six Sundays that summer — but was widely overshadowed in the news by Woodstock, which was happening about 100 miles away on one overlapping weekend.
