The Challenge Veteran Nelson Thomas to Have Foot Amputated 1 Year After Car Accident

Nelson Thomas made the difficult decision to have his foot amputated after a serious car accident.

MTV star Challenge underwent multiple surgeries and spent months in the hospital after being rescued from his burning car in Austin, Texas last March by Minnesota Vikings player KJ Osborn and three other good Samaritans. But on Sunday, the reality TV personality announced that he had decided to undergo amputation, scheduling his surgery on a significant date: March 5, 2004 – exactly one year before the date of his accident.

“5. March 2023 remains vivid in my memory, a persistent presence in my thoughts,” Thomas wrote on Instagram. “I consciously accept it as the beginning of a new chapter. By choosing to amputate, I am determined to embrace March 5 and redefine its meaning in my life.”

“Get ready, world of amputations! I’m on my way!” he added. “My surgery is scheduled for March 5, 2024.

Thomas’ post included pictures of his injuries and the accident, as well as an audio recording of a conversation between him and his doctor, who explained the surgery and answered all of Thomas’ questions.

The MTV star recalled that he had tried multiple procedures since the accident and that “it didn’t work.”

“I have to ask myself what kind of life do I want to live and what quality of life do I want to live,” he said, admitting that at first he wondered if it was the right thing to do, but he did a lot of research. “I think I’m at peace with that and it’s time.”

Thomas has been working hard on his recovery, regularly sharing updates with his 288,000 Instagram followers.

Over the weekend, he posted a video of himself working out in the gym. “Let’s embrace challenges, face the storm and overcome adversity. I will not run away. I will run towards my challenges, leaving a lasting impact that people will not forget…” he wrote in the caption.

In September, Thomas revealed he was facing a potential ankle amputation after doctors told him it had re-ruptured and was not healing.

“Come let’s see, where they have screws and plates, the bone broke. It didn’t heal,” he said at the time. “The doctor outlined my options. The stage I’m in right now is called the rescue stage, [means] either they can save my ankle or they can amputate it.”

“This isn’t going to break me, but damn, I’ve been listening to too much bad news,” Thomas added in a previous video. “I just wanted good news today.”
