This Pride Month, HBO will air The Walk, a documentary about the history of New York’s Meatpacking District as seen through the eyes of transgender sex workers. On June 21, 2023, the documentary will air live on HBO and HBO Max. It had its international debut earlier this year, on January 23, 2023, at the Sundance Film Festival. Kristen Lovell and Zackary Drucker, who represent the LGBTQ community and are best known for their films Random Acts of Flyness (2018) and She Gone Rogue (2012), are directing the documentary. The film is inspired by Kristen Lovell’s real-life experiences as an as*x worker in New York in the 1990s, when she chose the industry as a last resort after being rejected by other career prospects because of her gender identity.

The hosts, including director Kristen Lovell, can be seen in the teaser navigating Fourteenth Street known as “The Walk,” interviewing 11 trans women who have worked there for ages 2 to 25. They revealed their terrible experiences and how, as trans people of color, they often experienced prejudice from both their neighbors and their customers, who ended up exploiting them. The trailer also criticizes the media of the 1980s, which often referred to them as “criminals”, significantly contributing to their otherness.
Their allegations include being accused of murder, being detained by police officers who hired their services, being dragged half a block by cars, being chased out of the area and being beaten but denied hospital care, among other things. .
Despite their shared tragedy, the group comes together to fight for equal treatment and respect and refuses to discuss sex work with shame or stigma. Members of these groups also talk about their experiences protesting for equal rights. One of them states in the teaser,
“The system has never provided us with resources; we created them.”
The Stroll is getting rave reviews after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. The HBO documentary, which debuted on January 23, 2023 at the Sundance Film Festival, has received excellent reviews from reviewers. It has an IMDB rating of 7.7/10 and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 8.2/10.
