In addition to life in prison, Cashman received 10 years for the attack on Olivia’s mother, Cheryl Korbel, and 18 years each for two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. All of these terms will run concurrently, which means Cashman will be over 70 before he is considered for parole.

Without respect

Cashman refused to appear in the dock for sentencing. His lawyer, John Cooper KC, said he did not attend because he knew the Crown Prosecution Service was singing “We Are The Champions” after the verdict in the 19-day trial.

The judge, Judge Yip, said:

“The defendant did not admit responsibility for Olivia’s death and therefore showed no remorse. His failure to appear in court is another proof of that.”

impact statement

In court, Olivia’s mother, Cheryl Korbel, said her daughter was “loved by everyone” and “never stopped talking.”

She began to cry as she explained that Olivia was about to cut her hair to donate it to sick children, but Olivia was murdered just five days before the meeting.

Ms Korbel also revealed that her grandmother (Olivia’s great-grandmother) was hospitalized during the trial and died the night before Cashman’s sentencing. She believed that her grandmother was dying to hear that Cashman was found guilty.
