Death is common the Vampire Diaries, But they are almost reversed through some kind of resurrection. There are many characters who were killed and then resurrected. Major characters like Stefan, Damon, Elena, Caroline, and Bonnie all have a habit of dying and coming back to life.
However, several major characters, both human and supernatural, were permanently killed off in the show. They may reappear in flashbacks or as ghosts, but they are never alive again in the series.
Jenna Summers
One of the main characters in seasons 1 and 2 the Vampire DiariesJenna was turned into a vampire and killed by Klaus in Season 2, Episode 21, “The Sun Also Rises”. Although she never returned, she had a large impact on Elena and Jeremy’s lives, as she was their guardian after their parents died.
She is a kind and loving person who cares about Elena and Jeremy. So even years after Jenna passed away, they never forgot her. She is mentioned several times throughout the show, even appearing in flashbacks and as a spirit.
Olivia Parker
Olivia or Liv Parker is a witch from the Gemini Coven who appears in seasons five and six of the show. She was a student at Whitmore College who was killed in the season six finale and never resurrected.
Liv had to lose her entire family throughout her life. She witnessed her twin brother Luke and sister Joe die in front of her, which foreshadowed a difficult life for her. Eventually, she agreed to her boyfriend Tyler killing her so he could live on by activating the werewolf curse. She’s a great character and a powerful witch who can team up with Bonnie to help her in times of crisis.
Lexi Branson
Lexie was the best friend of Stefan Salvatore, who was killed by Damon. She first appeared in the show’s first season, and her friendship with Stefan was adorable as they both cared deeply for each other.
Damon killed her because he loved torturing his brother that way. However, Lexie continued to appear as a ghost or spirit, always helping Stefan. She was one of the most important people in Stefan’s life and was there to greet him when he finally died in the series finale.
Joe Laughlin
Joe is a doctor and a former witch. She was killed by her twin brother Kai during her wedding to Alaric. She wanted to live a normal, magic-free life with Alaric, but unfortunately, the Vampire Diaries, None of the characters can hope to live a “normal” life. She later appeared in subsequent episodes, but never returned alive.
Jo was pregnant with Alaric’s child when she died, but her children were transferred into the womb of Caroline, who later gave birth to them. Her twin daughters Josie and Lizzie can now be seen in the spin-off series, heritage.
Taylor Lockwood
Taylor was a recurring main character from the beginning to the end of the show. He had many storylines that directly affected the main characters, and he was the first werewolf to appear on the show. Tyler was permanently killed by Damon in the Season 8 episode “Eternal Pain.”
While Taylor’s character started out as an interesting character, his character was primarily used by the producers to advance the plot of the main characters. Tyler was a kid in season 1 whose father was terrible to him, so it’s a shame his character wasn’t properly developed. After his death, he appeared in the series finale as a spirit guarding his best friend Matt.
annabell
Annabelle or Anna first appeared in Season 1, Episode 11, where she is a vampire. She later started dating Jeremy Gilbert. Anna was staked by John Gilbert and met her end in the same manner as her mother in the season 1 finale, “The Day of the Founder.”
To achieve her goal of opening her mother’s grave, she did some questionable things, like turning Logan Field and Ben McKittrick into vampires. However, her crimes are much less serious than those of other vampires on the show. Anna was permanently dead in the first season, but she continued to appear as a ghost until the third season, when she found peace in the ghost world and reunited with her mother.
Enzo
Like Damon, Enzo, or Lorenzo, St. John is more of an antihero than a true villain in the fantasy series. Enzo’s past is filled with pain, he was betrayed by his best friend Damon, who left him to die. Enzo was killed by Stefan in the show’s final season, when Stefan’s humanity had been shut down.
Like Damon, Enzo’s character becomes more sympathetic when he falls in love with a woman (in his case, Bonnie). Interestingly, the show likes to kill off many characters just as they transition from villains to kind, caring characters in order to gain fans’ sympathy.
Liz Forbes
Caroline’s mother, Liz Forbes, is arguably the kindest character on the show. As Sheriff, she always sticks to her principles and cares about Mystic Falls. This is probably why, despite the many threats to her life in the show, her death is the least horrific of them all, as she died of cancer.
Her death had a major impact on Caroline and Stefan’s relationship, bringing them closer. However, this also made Caroline evil, as she shut down her humanity and refused to feel the pain of her mother’s death. Even after her death, Liz was constantly mentioned, mostly by Caroline, and she also appeared in the series finale as a subconscious manifestation and soul of Caroline.
Vicky Dovan
Matt Donavan’s sister Vicki is the first main character to die the Vampire Diaries. She was turned into a vampire by Damon and later tied to a stake by Stefan when she lost control of her hunger.
However, despite Vicki’s early death in the show, she still appears as a ghost and is constantly mentioned, mostly by Matt and Jeremy, who truly loved her. Vicky’s death was a major plot point, as it was the first time fans saw the true nature of vampires and how humans become vampires. This also triggers one of Damon’s many atrocities in Mystic Falls.
Stefan Salvador
Stefan Salvatore, one of the main characters of the show, died and was resurrected numerous times. Once locked in a safe at the bottom of a lake by his doppelgänger Silas, Stefan was doomed to repeatedly drown and come back alive. He goes on like this for months, so it’s hard to figure out how many times Stefan dies in the show.
However, his final death occurred in the series finale. After receiving treatment and becoming human, Stefan sacrificed his life to save his brother’s life and the life of the entire town of Mystic Falls. This sacrifice marked the end of his life, and he never came back alive. Stefan then reunites with his best friend Lexi as a ghost, making up for his bittersweet farewell to so many fans.
