The Voice Winner Sundance Head Has Been Released from Hospital After Accidentally Shooting Himself, His Wife Says

Jason “Sundance” Head is now recovering at home after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach, according to an update from his wife.

The country singer’s agent, Trey Newman, told PEOPLE that Head, 46, was injured Friday, Nov. 15, around 4-4:30 p.m. local time while hunting alone in the woods on his Texas ranch.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, Head’s wife, Misty, shared an update on her husband’s condition on Facebook, writing that he was “released [from the hospital] late last night.” She added that it was a difficult three-hour drive home, “because the medicine was wearing off” and “[Head] was bleeding profusely through the bandages.”

“I was able to change and clean the dressings and repack, even though he’s not an easy patient, and I gave him some Motrin. I’m not sure I slept because I was worried about him,” Misty wrote, noting that “hearing him snore was music to my ears.”

Misty said her husband – who is the winner of the 11th season of NBC Voice — he was incredibly “lucky”, saying that the bullet would have been “devastating” if it had been a little higher or lower.

“He’s definitely going to have a lot to say,” she continued, “and when he feels ready, I’ll have him make a video in his own words.”

Misty concluded the update with a photo of the T-shirt her husband was wearing during the accident, warning fans not to look too closely at the bullet hole if they have a “weak stomach.”

In a previous statement, Misty said Head was unable to call 911 when the crash happened because he couldn’t find his phone and his pockets were “full of blood.” She said he pulled onto a nearby road to call for help and a good Samaritan eventually stopped to help.

The “Darlin’ Don’t Go” singer was airlifted to the hospital, where medical personnel said the “bullet entered above his belly button and lodged in his abdominal wall without all vital organs,” according to a Misty Facebook update. “He won’t need surgery because they don’t remove the bullet,” added the singer’s wife.

Head — known for his big heart — was a fan favorite during his season Vote. When he eventually won during the show’s finale in December 2016, he made sure to give his wife credit, exclaiming: “Misty Head, she’s a real champ!”

“It was really important to me to be able to walk into your living room,” Head told PEOPLE after his win. “I just hope to bring you joy when you listen to my music.”
