Take this big black dot – which you won’t able to see in a moment.

Honestly.

To make it disappear got to the picture with the cross and the dot.

Close your left eye and stare at the cross with your right eye.

Then slowly move your head forward and backward and the dot will miraculously disappear.

Wow.

Now close one eye and move your head back and forth.

The reason this works is explained by the clever boffins at ASAP Science, in a fascinating video.

As the video explains, this trick shows the exact position of your blind spot.

It goes on: “The cells at the front of the eye translate light into signals that are sent to your brain.”

It explains that they are missing at the point where the optical nerves and blood vessels connect to the eye, “so anything at that point in your vision you can’t see.”

The video goes on to explain other optical illusions including the image of a grid with several black dots, which are almost impossible to see at once.

There is also a flashing rectangle puzzle which is so freaky it will blow your mind.

The two rectangles appear to flash out of sync until coloured blocks are placed either side, and then they appear to flash together.

But move the blocks a tiny fraction and they are out of sync once more.

There’s also some amazing tricks of the mind using words, which have you reading a different sentence to what is actually on the screen.

The video explains: “Our eyes and brains have evolved to see but our vision makes assumptions based on learning, memory and expectations and all of these illusions take advantage of this adaptation.

Instead of taking in every detail to be 100 per cent accurate, which would cause “brain overload” your brain makes assumptions.

The video continues: “This faster perception allows for faster reflexes and faster conscious and unconscious decisions.”

Here are ten of the best optical illusions around at the moment.

Enjoy.
