Bosses of the axed pilot revealed the staff member – who has since quit – had an affair with the contestant.

It comes just months after ITV was rocked by former presenter Phillip Schofield’s shock admission that he had an affair with a much younger female runner, prompting an external investigation led by barrister Jane Mulcahy.

An insider said of the latest scandal with the pilot, fronted by Place in the Sun presenter Laura Hamilton: “Bosses were furious when they found out the producer had an affair with a contestant, especially in light of this year’s This Morning scandal and controversy.

“That meant there was another investigation into what happened in Barbados that had to be done.

“It was disappointing for senior members of staff. The producer immediately quit.”

An ITV spokeswoman said: “We are unable to comment on the details of any specific employment matters.”

Meanwhile, there are fears that ITV will not publish the lawyers’ full report despite promises of transparency.
