Bailey attended North Carolina State University and was a key member of the Wolfpack’s 1983 NCAA Championship run. Under head coach Jim Valvano, he led the Wolfpack in scoring and rebounding that season. The Utah Jazz chose him as the seventh pick in the 1983 NBA draft. Similarly, he was selected by Jazz management for the strength of his character as well as the strength of his game. Bailey started most of his first two seasons with the Jazz, but coach Frank Layden made Bailey one of the first options off the bench after the Jazz drafted Karl Malone. Bailey’s two best NBA seasons came in 1987–88 (19.6 ppg, 82 games played, ten starts) and 1988–89 (19.6 ppg, 82 games played, ten starts) (19.5 ppg , 82 rounds, three starts) . His peers nicknamed him “Big T.”
On November 25, 1991, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Tyrone Corbin and a 1992 second-round draft pick. Bailey stands out by appearing in 84 regular season games for both clubs in 1991-92. He spent nearly three seasons in Minnesota before leaving for the Greek League (for Panionios) in 1994–95. Bailey spent 1995–97 in the Italian league with Polti Cantù and 1997–98 with Stefanel Milano before signing as a free agent with the Jazz on January 21, 1999.
