Tiffany Haddish Addresses Backlash Over Shakira VMAs Photobomb: ‘Thank You All for Making Me More Famous and Relevant’

Tiffany Haddish has a message for her critics.

The Girls trip star, 43, shared a post on Xu responding to criticism of her behavior towards Shakira at the 2023 MTV VMAs.

The comedian received backlash after Pop Crave posted a video on X of her following the pop star, 46, backstage at the Sept. 12 awards show.

In the clip, Haddish loudly chanted Shakira’s name as she tried to catch up with the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer as she made her way through the crowd to take photos with her fans. At the end of the video, the actress approached the singer and photobombed her selfie with a fan.

The comedian also photobombed a photo of Shakira and her “TQG” collaborator Karol G, as well as a solo shot of the “She Wolf” singer with her two Moon Person trophies (she was awarded the Video Vanguard Award and won Best Collaboration for “TQG” at the ceremony ).

After Pop Crave’s post received negative feedback, Haddish responded to it on Friday, writing, “This is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much this for me. She continued: »He has this experience [allowed] to realize how popular I really am. I appreciate all your opinions… Thank you 🙏🏽 Shana Tova.”

On Saturday, Haddish appeared to address the backlash over her behavior toward Shakira in a post on x, writing, “When people make videos about me or talk about me good or bad. I just think I thank you all for making me more famous and relevant.”

“I can see it driving the enemies crazy because they really want to be where I am, that’s never going to happen. 😂😂😂😂😂,” she concluded.

The Night school star also acknowledged her VMA antics by responding to two other posts about her on Xu.

One X user shared a video of someone saying, “Get your ass up, we need to get the fuck out of here now,” and captioned the clip, “Shakira when she saw Tiffany Haddish.” The comedian responded with a few smiling emojis.

Another user echoed the same sentiment, writing, “Somebody needs to put that girl on a timeout, like she needs to be stopped,” with Haddish once again responding with a smiling emoji.

It would take a lot more than a botched red carpet photo to ruin Shakira’s big night at the 2023 VMAs.

In addition to adding two new awards to her Moon Person trophy collection — bringing her total VMA wins to four — the “Gypsy” singer brought practically the entire crowd to their feet with her high-energy set before accepting the Video Vanguard award, which recognizes an artist’s lifework.

The singer performed a selection of her hits including “She Wolf”, “Te Felicito”, “Objection (Tango)”, “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie”.

For the last song, “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” the singer went all out, bringing people on stage to dance with her and even crowd surfing.

During her speech, she thanked MTV, her label, her parents and her children, Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, who accompanied her to the ceremony.

Shakira ended her heartfelt speech by thanking her fans.

“And I especially want to share this award with my fans, who always, always support me in everything,” she said. “Thank you so much for being my army and helping me in all my battles.”

She continued her speech in Spanish, dedicating the award to her supporters and giving special greetings to her fans from Latin America.

“Lo quiero muchísimo,” she concluded.
