Tim Sheehy Montana News
Tim Sheehy, the leading Republican candidate for the United States Senate, announced his candidacy on Tuesday. He hopes to face Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in what is expected to be one of the most competitive Senate races in 2024.
Former Navy SEAL Sheehy opened up about his time in Afghanistan before moving to Montana with his wife to start a space business in a minute-long video posted to Twitter.
Sheehy noted in the film: “Whether it’s in war or in business, I recognize problems and I solve them. “I am running for the Senate because America needs conservative leaders who care about our nation.
Sheehy is running in a state that consistently votes Republican for president. President Donald Trump defeated President Joe Biden in Montana in 2020 by a 16-point margin. In the same election, incumbent Republican Sen. Steve Daines defeated the Democratic challenger and then-Governor. Steve Bullock for 10 points. The Cook Political Report currently assigns the 2024 Montana Senate race a weak Democratic rating.
Daines, who is currently the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, issued a statement calling Tim Sheehy “a decorated veteran, a successful businessman and a great Montanan.” I am so happy that he decided to run for the Montana Senate.
Sheehy received an early endorsement from the Republican Senate Campaign Committee, but there could be other candidates in the Republican primary. Rep. Matt Rosendale, a close ally of former President Trump and a member of the Freedom Caucus, is also expected to enter the campaign, possibly sparking a violent primary.
In 2018, Rosendale was defeated by Tester in the Senate race. On Tuesday, he tweeted: “Congratulations to Mitch McConnell and the party bosses on the choice of your candidate. Tim Sheehy and Jon Tester are the current candidates in Washington to defend the DC cartel. He went on to say that he believes Montanans will reject the “McConnell-Biden” plan because they are not following orders from Washington.
In February, Tester announced his intention to run for re-election for the fourth time. Democrats touted his experience in Washington pushing for bipartisan legislation, as well as his strong ties to Montana as a third-generation farmer.
In a statement, Montana Democratic Party spokeswoman Monica Robinson quipped, “Jon Tester has farm equipment that has been in Montana longer than Tim Sheehy.” Recruited by Mitch McConnell and DC lobbyists, an out-of-state transplant is the last thing Montanans want in a senator. Tim Sheehy is only now beginning to face difficult questions.
Though Republicans, who lost their majority in 2018, appear to have a better chance of winning Senate seats in 2024 than Democrats, who currently enjoy a one-seat majority.
