dispute

  • In March 2021, days after taking over as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Tirath Singh made a controversial speech against the practice of women wearing “ripped jeans”. He made the allegedly discriminatory remarks against women at a seminar organised by the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Dehradun. Recalling an anecdote, Tirath said he was shocked to see a woman running an NGO wearing a pair of ripped jeans and was worried about the precedent she would set for the society. After the speech went viral, Tirath had to face the wrath of netizens and opposition leaders.

  • A few days ago, Tirat Singh caused a controversy by making a statement about women wearing ripped jeans. A few days later, he caused another controversy by saying that if people want more food rations, they should have more children. He said:

Those who have ten children get fifty kilos, those who have twenty get one quintal. Those who have two children get ten kilos. People build shops and find buyers. Who is to blame? Now you are jealous. When you had time, you only had two children. Why didn’t you have twenty?”

In his speech, he also misquoted an important historical fact, confusing Britain and the United States. He said,

India is doing a better job in handling the pandemic compared to other countries. On the other hand, the US, which enslaved us for 200 years and ruled the entire world, is struggling to control the virus”
