Vicky Nguyen is known for her Emmy-winning reporting and the expert financial advice she provides during her regular appearances on Today show. But there’s one thing she forgot during Thursday, December 26’s broadcast: her shoes!
The NBC News Daily anchor and senior consumer research correspondent joined weekend co-hosts Laura Jarrett and Peter Alexander for segments on student loan changes in 2025. And while discussing the story with NBC News’ Jacob Soboroff afterward, Alexander made sure to call out Nguyen “Christmas slippers.”
“That’s a good look!” he said, pointing to the oversized yellow loafers Nguyen wore with her purple suit.
“Oh no neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”]before explaining what led to the accident: “This is the day after Christmas mom brain moment where I thought I had shoes but I didn’t.”

She continued to thank Todaythe director for cutting out her embarrassment before Alexander pointed it out.
“Look, they’re very comfortable, I’d say,” she joked.
All of Nguyen’s colleagues supported her, including meteorologist Dylan Dreyer. “We all want to feel good after Christmas, don’t we?” she said. “We ate too much! We’re just tired!”
And Jarrett made sure to tease Alexander, telling him, “You’ll never get out of the doghouse for that.”

At home, she shares three daughters — Emerson, 15, Odessa, 12, and Renley, 8 — with husband Brian. Last year, the family of five posed together for Barbie– themed Christmas cards, creating a “family pack” of toy figures.
“Now that the girls are getting older, they have their own opinions, but this was an easy unanimous yes,” Nguyen told Today.com of the card. “We were so excited to have Barbie in our mojo dojo casa home. We just want to create these fun memories for our daughters and bring something fun and joyful into the world.”
It turns out that Christmas card photos are part of the Nguyen family tradition.
“Every year we try to find something fun in the zeitgeist or meaningful to us and our loved ones,” she said. “The first year we moved to New York, we did a shoot on the subway in old-school hip-hop sweatpants. We did one that was ’80s workout themed. We just want to surprise and delight our friends and family.”
Today airs weekdays beginning at 7 a.m. ET on NBC.
