News about Tom Brokaw
Tom Brokaw, the legendary television host, is opening up about his difficult decision to leave NBC News after he was diagnosed with incurable blood cancer.
Brokaw talks about how difficult it was to leave NBC in 2021, eight years after he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, in an interview with his friend and fellow journalist Jane Pauley that will appear this weekend on CBS News Sunday Morning.
In a short video posted Friday, Brokaw, 83, says: “I had to change my life.” “I really had to stop working with NBC every day. You see, they were moving away from me, so I had to do the same. I was just a different person.
First, Brokaw said goodbye to the network he had called home since 1966, as well as his prized position at NBC News. After stepping down as anchor of NBC’s evening news in 2004, he became an elderly statesman. But the disease changed his course, forcing him to leave the station.
The renowned journalist also remembers the apprehension he had after ending his 55-year career. “For the first time in my life, I found myself in uncharted territory, navigating uncharted waters,” he says.

In his interview with Pauley, Brokaw talks about how his diagnosis humbled him. He admits, “I had a lot of problems.” Before, he thought he was resistant to life’s difficulties. But as I got older, this problem got worse. But as I got older, that condition became established as a given. It is important to handle it the best you can.
From 1976 to 1981, Brokaw and Pauley co-hosted NBC’s morning show Today. They speak as Brokaw publishes his autobiography, Never Give Up: The Story of a Prairie Family, a tribute to his working parents.
