After two years at Perry Ellis, he moved to Milan, where Gucci hired Ford as its chief womenswear designer.
Gucci was just another Italian fashion house that was in financial trouble at the time. Ford’s contribution to Gucci was outstanding, and he soon took over as Gucci’s design director in 1992. He quickly expanded the menswear and other clothing divisions, and by 1993 he was in charge of eleven product lines. Mello was the public face of the company at the time. As a result, his presence overshadowed Ford’s contribution. In 1994, he was appointed creative director. By 1999, Gucci was nearly bankrupt, valued at $4.3 billion, and owed most of its success to Ford. When Gucci bought the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1999, Ford also became the brand’s creative director.
In March 2005, Ford announced the establishment of his film production company Fade to Black. In 2009, he made his directorial debut with the film ‘A Single Man’, based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood. His interest in filmmaking continued in 2015 when he directed Nocturnal Animals, a film based on Austin Wright’s novel Tony and Susan.
