Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Step Out Together in Athens for Children’s Charity Event

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson came out with a good cause.

The couple attended the annual Together for Children benefit concert at the Odeon Herodes Atticus in Athens, Greece on Tuesday night. The Elvis star, 67, and his wife, 66, were photographed against the backdrop of the ancient outdoor theatre, looking glamorous for the occasion. Hanks wore a black shirt and pants, while Wilson complemented him in a long black dress trimmed with white fringe.

Together for Children was founded in 1966 with the mission of helping children who are faced with poverty, physical and mental disabilities, social exclusion, family violence and other challenges. The Athens-based organization holds a fundraising event each year that includes musical performances and other entertainment.

Hanks and Wilson have a long history of quietly supporting a variety of charities, including the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, amFAR, the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, and the Children’s Health Fund.

The couple spent several months in Greece last year, while they teamed up on production My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. Wilson spoke about the project at ComicCon earlier this year, expressing her excitement that Nia Vardalos is not only reprising her role, but writing and directing the final film in the franchise.

“It’s exciting to have Nia Vardalos, an Oscar-nominated writer,” Wilson said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “Not only in front of the camera as our star, but also behind the camera as our director, leading our beloved cast for this third film shot on location in Greece.”

My big fat Greek wedding has been delighting the audience for 21 years. I’m so happy that more joy is on the way,” she added of the film, which opened in theaters on Friday.

Hanks and Wilson recently celebrated a special moment – Dirty the star’s 67th birthday on July 9. Wilson wrote a touching tribute to her husband of 35 years on Instagram at the time. “Happy birthday to this man who is my lover, my best friend, my family, the father of my children,” she said, before her post took a playful turn.

In May, Hanks added another accolade to his ever-growing pile — an honorary degree from Harvard. The University of Cambridge in Massachusetts awarded him an honorary doctorate of arts, and the actor also gave a speech at the school’s opening.

Addressing the Class of 2023, Hanks joked that he received his degree “without doing a single job, without spending any time in class, without ever stepping into that library.”

He called on the graduates to reject “indifference” and take a stand for what is important.

“Every day, every year and for every graduating class there is a choice to be made,” he said. “It is the same option for all adults who must decide to be one of three types of Americans: those who embrace freedom and liberty for all, those who will not, or those who are indifferent. Only the first work to create a more perfect unity, an indivisible nation. The others stand on way.”
