Tom Holland Says 'I Would Just Go Too Far' When He Was Drinking: 'Ruin My Next Day'

Tom Holland has reached the milestone of three years sobriety – and he’s shared what led him to ditch alcohol for good.

“My problem was I’d have one drink and I’d be fine and then I’d go too far,” said Holland, 29. Men’s health for their January/February issue.

He further noted that while struggling with alcohol cravings, his lawyer gave him “really poignant advice that helped me get through it all, which is: You’re never going to wake up the morning after a night out and wish you had a drink. That advice really rang true for me.”

The actor began participating in Dry January 2022, initially planning to abstain only for a month. However, his sobriety was prolonged when he realized that alcohol had become an essential part of his life.

“Every Friday after work there was a write-off: Let’s get drunk and have fun. I haven’t had any bad experiences, but I’d drink enough to ruin the next day,” The Spider-Man the star said, adding that the “eye-opening moment” was when he asked his younger brother for a ride home from a party because Holland needed to drink to enjoy himself. “It’s really helpful when the people closest to you start asking ‘Are you sure?’ ”

However, he shared early struggles with his sobriety, particularly due to on-set challenges while filming the Apple TV+ series A crowded room in May 2022.

“There was a lot of hostility on that set. It was not a very harmonious place, there were a lot of arguments and conflicts,” he said. “I thought, ‘If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s going to be worse, right?’ ”

Although he never sought rehab, Holland noted that he “relied a lot on those close to me: family, friends, old colleagues, new colleagues, people who reached out that I didn’t know who were also sober.”

“I’m pretty strong-willed,” said Holland, who has since launched a line of non-alcoholic beers, Bero. “When I decide to do something, I will really do it.”
