In a statement today, Bullseye wrote: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and beloved colleague Mr. Tony Green.

“Tony passed away peacefully today after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

“Our love, thoughts and prayers go out to all of Tony’s family, for whom we have great love, all of Tony’s friends and those who were fortunate enough to work with him.

“Thank you Tony for all the memories, all the laughs (and trust us there were a lot of them!) and all the special times we spent shooting Bullseye together, what a wonderful year it was and we’re honored to share it with you.

“We will miss you dear friend.”

Tony was the announcer and co-host of the popular darts quiz Bullseye from 1982 to 1995.

At its peak, the series was watched by 20 million people and was loved for its bizarre prizes and catchphrases.

Tony reprized his role as “the scorer” in a special edition of the show in May 2007.

He was also the BBC’s lead commentator for the first BDO World Cup in 1978.

The star held that position until the 2016 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship – the last to be broadcast by the broadcaster.

Some of the best parts of the Bullseye series are coming back to the screens

In 2010, Tony was forced to take a break from presenting while receiving treatment for tongue cancer.

But he returned two years later after a full recovery.

His death is the second to hit the Bullseye after Jim Bowen passed away in March 2018 at the age of 80.

Then Tony said: “I lost a legend today but most of all a friend. RIP Jim x.”

Sports blogger Elliot West took to social media to pay his respects.

He wrote: “RIP Tony Green. A true legend, a brilliant darts commentator and the centerpiece of Bullseye.”

Fans also paid tribute, with Alex Casswell writing on X: “If there was ever an essential part of the @BullseyeTVshow that I’ll always remember, it’s Tony Green’s great commentary.

“His banter with Jim Bowen and his still famous catchphrases like ‘INNNNNNN ONNEE!’ and ‘Bully’s Special Award!’ The world has lost such a great man.”
