Bomb squad officers rushed to the scene and eventually found that it had been defused.
Lt Col Clark, 54, of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and head of public affairs, was due to fly home on leave.
He was arrested and charged and is scheduled to appear in court.
A source said: “All of the grenade’s explosives were removed so it could be used safely in training. But to the untrained eye it looked exactly like a real grenade.
“Imagine if a terrorist carried it in the air and waved it in front of the passengers, it could have caused total chaos.”
The military confirmed that the soldier was involved in a security incident in October, but did not comment further.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 8.05am on Wednesday 16 October 2024, police were called by security at Edinburgh Airport after an unused weapon was found during a scan of a passenger’s hand luggage.
“Explosive Ordnance Disposal attended and the item was assessed as non-viable and does not pose a threat.
“A 54-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection and released on a bond to appear in court at a later date.”
