A TOP BBC show creator has died just weeks after filming began on the new series of her latest show.

Tributes have poured in for Jude Tindall following the star’s shocking death this week.

Jude is behind a number of successful shows produced by the BBC, including Shakespeare & Hathaway and The Mysteries of Sister Boniface.

In a statement, BBC Studios said: “We are sorry to share the sad death of beloved Sister Boniface creator, co-creator of Shakespeare and Hathaway and master of comfortable crime, Jude Tindall.

“Jude was a brilliant writer, writing countless episodes of Sister Boniface, Father Brown, Accidents, Land Girls and Doctors. Those who had the privilege of working with her will know how passionate she was about her shows and how generously she helped develop the next generation writers and producers.

“She will be sorely missed by the BBC Studios Drama team and our thoughts remain with her family.

“With Sister Boniface Series 1 starting on BBC One this Friday, the first episode will be dedicated to Jude’s memory.”

UKTV channel U&Dave paid tribute to the screenwriter as they also shared the news of her death on social media.

They said: “We are sorry to share news of the sad death of beloved creator of Sister Boniface and co-creator of Shakespeare and Hathaway, Jude Tindall.

“Our thoughts remain with her friends. What are your fondest memories from the work Jude created.”

Tributes poured in from fans, with one writing: “So sorry to hear this sad news. Jude was an excellent writer. My thoughts are with my family and friends at this very sad time.”

Another wrote: “Two great shows. So sorry Jude Tindall has passed away. RIP.”

“This is sad. She was a smart writer,” said a third.

While a fourth commented: “Such sad news, condolences to her family. Her talent will surely be missed, I love both shows.”

The news of Jude’s death comes just weeks after filming began on the fourth series of the hit comedy drama Sister Bonfire Mysteries.

The series has become a worldwide hit since it was first launched in 2022.

Jude has also written for popular medical soaps Doctors and Casualty.

BBC crime dramas

The BBC is reopening the files on an all-star crime series this summer.

Here’s a refresher of popular programs spanning six decades.

  • Campion: Aired from 1989 to 1990, this detective drama series was adapted from the Margery Allingham novels and starred Peter Davison.
  • Dalziel and Pascoe: a gritty detective drama about a mismatched pair of cops, based on the award-winning books by Reginald Hill. It was broadcast from 1996 to 2007.
  • Death in Paradise: A misanthropic detective inspector is assigned to a Caribbean island against his will. It premiered in 2011 and continues to air today.
  • Happy Valley: Created by Sally Wainwright, this northern noir follows Sarah Lancashire as Sergeant Catherine Cawood – tough, defiant and dealing with her traumatic past.
  • Hinterland: Welsh drama starring Richard Harrington. The brooding DCI Tom Mathias uncovers secrets – and makes connections with his troubled past amid mountainous terrain and close-knit villages. Broadcast from 2013 to 2016.
  • Inspector Lynley Mysteries: Based on the novels by Elizabeth George, this drama series follows upper class inspector Thomas Lynley and working class DS Barbara Havers. It was broadcast from 2001 to 2007.
  • Jonathan Creek: This comedy-drama series starring comedian Alan Davies follows a magic trick inventor who is often called upon to solve mysterious murders. Broadcast from 1997 to 2016.
  • Law & Order: Originally broadcast in 1978, this four-part drama series is about the British justice system. Stars include Peter Dean and Derek Martin.
  • Life on Mars: a seductive sci-fi police drama that follows a Manchester policeman who returns to 1973 after a car accident. Starring John Simm and Philip Glenister. Broadcast from 2006 to 2007.
  • Luther: crime drama series with Idris Elba as Inspector John Luther. It aired from 2010 to 2019, and the next film was released in 2023.
  • Shetland: Detective drama starring Douglas Henshall, Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell, which shows the dark side of one of the most beautiful places in the world. It premiered in 2013 and continues to air today.
  • Cops: Set in the fictional northern town of Stanton, this acclaimed, provocative police drama stars Katy Cavanagh, Rob Dixon and John Henshaw. It was broadcast from 1998 to 2001.
  • Waking the Dead: With a cast that includes Trevor Eve, Sue Johnston and Wil Johnson, this series follows a team of unsolved cases who uncover the secrets of sleep, but sometimes the past is best left buried. It was broadcast from 2000 to 2011.
  • Wallander: Starring Sir Kenneth Branagh, Kurt Wallander can’t see the dark crimes he’s been assigned to investigate, while Wallander’s job comes at a cost to his family and relationships. It was broadcast from 2008 to 2016.
