Tori Spelling Says Her Marriage to Dean McDermott Was 'Never the Same' Once They Started Having Kids

During the first episode of her new podcast wrong SPELLINGthe Beverly Hills, 90210 The alum, 50, reflected on her recent decision to file for divorce from her estranged husband, sharing how their marriage hasn’t been the same since they started having children.

The former couple are parents to Beau (7), Finn (11), Hattie (12), Stella (15) and Liam (17).

“When I got pregnant, we got pregnant right away. So we got married in May and we started trying right away,” Spelling said, adding that she got pregnant shortly after her dad passed away.

“I basically got pregnant right after my dad passed away. So I took it as, ‘Oh, that’s a sign. This is meant to be and this is how it was planned to happen,'” the mom of five continued.

“Honestly, our relationship was never the same after we started having kids,” Spelling said. “We’ve always said, ‘We’re not going to be the parents who change. We’re going to make sure our relationship is a priority, the two of us. We have dates.’

The actress admitted that “everything went out the window” after they welcomed their children.

“And I get it — that doesn’t excuse his behavior and everything he did and how he handled things. And I don’t minimize his role in this and how his lack of sobriety affected me and the kids for years and years and years,” Spelling said.

Adding that she’s happy McDermott is sober, the star said their relationship really changed when she felt like she was on her own parenting their children.

“He was there too, but he was an extra set of hands. He put the car seat in because I didn’t know how to do it and things like that. Emotionally, I was it,” Spelling explained. “Like, ‘Tag, you’re the one.'” I was the parent.”

“It was a big responsibility while also rebuilding my career – which I did. We became a family brand. I went from Hollywood rich woman to cool mom. ‘Look at her. She does everything.’ Meanwhile, behind the scenes, everything was falling apart.”

Last week, Spelling filed for divorce from McDermott, 57, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the mother of five is seeking sole physical and joint legal custody of her children.

At the time, reps for Spelling and McDermott did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
