Tracey Edmonds Claims It Was ‘My Decision’ to End Deion Sanders Engagement: ‘I’ve Chosen to Prioritize Myself’

Tracey Edmonds opens up about how her relationship with Deion Sanders ended.

The TV and film producer, 56, wrote on Instagram on Sunday that it was her decision to call off her engagement to the NFL great, also 56. The couple announced last week that they were separating, more than a decade after meeting in 2012. and almost five years after the announcement of the engagement in 2019.

“I want to make it clear that it is my decision to end the relationship, despite any narratives to the contrary,” Edmonds claimed in the post.

“I have chosen to prioritize myself and my family, move forward to a future where I am valued, treated fairly and freely embrace the happiness and respect I deserve,” she added.

Edmonds also explained her reasons for making the statement, captioning the post: “I hate having to answer to the media, but sometimes it’s necessary when the lies get out of hand! ✌🏽❤️.”

A representative for Sanders did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday.

Deion Sanders and Tracey Edmonds call off engagement: ‘We made this decision with love in our hearts’

On Dec. 3, Edmonds and Sanders announced they had called off their engagement in a joint statement describing the breakup as a mutual decision. The former couple explained that they made the decision “with love in their hearts, respect for each other and appreciation of the time we spent together.”

In the comments on the post, Sanders wrote that his ex-fiancée “is a real blessing to me.”

“I cherish the moments we shared and the laughs we had. You are an amazing woman and a great mother,” he wrote. “God bless you with every endeavor and every step you take. You are HER. Tracey-Mack!!!”

Sanders and Edmonds, who met at the film’s premiere party, have since been candid with fans on social media following the split announcement, with Edmonds in a separate post expressing her gratitude for the “wonderful posts, texts, messages and calls” she’s received in response.

“Your love, support and kindness energize me! Sending everyone LOVE!” she added.

On Sunday, shortly after Edmonds’ new Instagram clarification of the breakup, Sanders posted a few encouraging messages of his own on X (formerly Twitter). One read: “Not everyone is proud of you. They’re just surprised you keep making things happen.” Another post included the message: “The devil couldn’t get you out so he’s trying to wear you down. Don’t you dare get tired. Hang in there because the tide is turning.”

Along with a selfie later shared on Xu, which shows the Colorado coach smiling for the camera, Sanders wrote that he “can’t help but smile.”

Edmonds has two sons, Brandon and Dylan, with musician Babyface. Sanders has five children of his own. He shares two with his first wife Carolyn Chambers (daughter Deiondra, 31 and son Deion Jr., 29), and three children with his second wife Pilar Biggers-Sanders (daughter Shelomi, 18 and sons Shilo, 23 and Shedeur, 21).
