Travis Kelce Tells Brother Jason He Was ‘Defending Your Family’ in Phone-Smashing Incident

Jason Kelce will forever have Travis Kelce in his corner.

After the retired Philadelphia Eagles star, 37, went viral on Saturday, Nov. 2, for smashing the phone of a Penn State football fan who called Travis, 35, a “fucking date with Taylor Swift” and later repeated the homophobic slur back at the fan, his younger brother reacted to the incident during the Wednesday, November 6 edition of their show. “I know it’s weighing on you, bro. It’s … bullshit. You shouldn’t be feeling that way,” Travis said of the interaction that took place outside Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa., before Jason’s appearance on ESPN College game day during the Penn State-Ohio State game.

Travis said he believes the people who “uploaded the videos” of the incident created a “bigger situation than I think.”

“The real situation is that some fucking clown came up to you and talked about your family, and you reacted in a way that defended your family, and maybe you used some words that you regret using,” Kansas City Chiefs tight end he said.

“It’s a situation that you just have to learn from and accept. I think that you owning it and talking about it shows how honest you are to a lot of people in this world,” Travis continued. “You don’t choose hate, you just aren’t.”

Travis’ remarks came after Jason, who first spoke about the incident on the Nov. 4 edition of ESPN. Monday night countdownhe said on the podcast that he was “not happy about the situation” and that his reaction “gave the situation notoriety”.

The former football center said his “biggest regret was saying that word, to be honest with you … the word he used is just f—— ridiculous and takes it to another level. It’s just a wall, f —— over the line.”

“It’s dehumanizing and it got under my skin, it caused a reaction,” Jason continued.

“In the heat of the moment I thought ‘Hey, what am I going to say back to him? I’m going to throw this s— back in his face. F— him,'” he said, admitting he now knows he “shouldn’t have done that.”

Penn State Police confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday, Nov. 5, that the altercation is under investigation. At the time of the incident, PEOPLE reached out to representatives for Jason and ESPN, but did not immediately hear back.
