Tristan Thompson became the temporary guardian of his younger brother Amari.
On Wednesday morning, the Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County, granted Thompson temporary custody of his 17-year-old brother. The ruling gives Thompson, 32, “all the powers that a parent who has legal custody of a child would have,” according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
The NBA players’ request for custody follows the death of their mother Andrea, who died in January.
Thompson’s younger brother has epilepsy, along with other medical conditions that require round-the-clock support, which is why Thompson sought custody.

The NBA free agent is also given the authority to “manage the protégé’s finances and property, travel with the protégé within the United States and abroad, enroll the protégé in social and other extracurricular activities, and decide on the protégé’s lifestyle.” [and] obtain legal counsel on behalf of the ward,” according to official court documents.

The decision came after the court ruled there was “sufficient evidence” and “good cause” for Thompson to take temporary custody of Amari.
Prior to the court’s decision, Thompson filed for sole legal custody of Amari on September 8.
In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Thompson claimed that their father, Trevor Thompson, had been absent from his younger brother’s life since 2014. The father of four also claimed to be Amari’s closest living family member.

According to initial court documents dated Sept. 8, “Amari is a minor and has health issues that prevent him from caring for himself or seeking gainful employment.”
The original filing continued: “Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interests as it would ensure that someone is responsible for providing for and meeting his basic needs.”
Thompson also told the court that he would like to help his brother manage and invest their mother’s inheritance.
