Trixie Mattel Says Relationship with Her Partner Was Put to the Test on Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home (Exclusive)

Drag queen superstar Trixie Mattel is back on TV, this time renovating her home for a brand new season Motel Trixie.

Synchronized Drag me homeoriginal series Max follows Mattel and her partner, David Silver, as they decide to invest in their first place together — and move into the same space for the first time in their seven-year relationship.

For both of them, it was not only a financial obligation, but also an emotional one. “It’s been long and hard, and we’ve both been impatient,” she tells PEOPLE. “On the show, we kind of live on top of each other while we’re renovating. It was really hard. I mean, people get divorced over bathroom wallpaper.”

Silver’s presence on the show wasn’t intentional, at least not at the beginning, when he and Mattel converted their old Palm Springs motel into a pink playhouse with rooms themed to the first season.

“David never wanted to be on TV or anything. When the show started, David was an executive producer,” says Mattel. “But then organically he’d be in scenes, like, choosing wallpaper or, like, trying out paint swatches. And then it was like, ‘Well, he’s really just into it.’ ”

“With this project, it wouldn’t have made any sense to renovate the house without the other person who was going to live here being involved,” she continues, noting, “In terms of storytelling, it didn’t make sense. So he’s definitely into it.”

It wasn’t just Silver who wasn’t going to be on TV. Mattel tells PEOPLE that she intentionally kept their relationship a secret over the years.

“The intimate inside of our relationship is something I’ve never shared. Other than writing some songs about him, I haven’t really shown him to people,” she says. “And I kept it kind of private because I always kind of felt that, as a public person, my partner shouldn’t be subjected to being a public person.”

Still, the decision to share their relationship — both as renovators and as a couple — paid off, and the audience got to see their dynamic play out, especially during the decision-making process.

“You can see in this series that sometimes we have different ideas about what we want in a house,” Mattel admits, noting that Silver is now “like an accidental reality star.”
