- Tulika’s mother was a single mother and experienced many difficulties in raising her. She once drove 20 kilometers on a motorcycle to take Tulika to school, and then reported to the police station. After school, Tulika often stayed with her mother at the police station because there was no one at home to take care of her. Her mother was worried about her living in an environment with criminals and police, so she enrolled her in a judo club to pass the time. Her mother said in an interview that she wasn’t that serious about the game at first, but later became passionate about it. When her mother realized Tulika wanted to pursue a career in judo, she took out some loans and put her pension fund toward her training. In an interview, she discussed her efforts and said:
If I earn 10 rupees, I spend 40 rupees on her training and other requirements. I have taken out 3-4 personal loans and withdrawn money from my pension fund…I did whatever she wanted. Zindagi ki kamai laga di (Put in my lifetime earnings). “
- In an interview, her mother said Tulika was a tomboy as a child. Her mother said Tulika looked different when she had to wear a skirt to school. In an interview, she talked about Tulika and said,
From the beginning, Tulika was a tomboy. She always played soccer with the boys. When she would wear a skirt to school, neighbors would comment: “Look at Ganga (Tulika’s nickname) in a skirt.” It was funny to them. This is weird to me too. I would tell her: ‘Seeing you in a dress is like seeing a bagpipe (whiskey bottle) in the car. Something doesn’t look right. But judo is where she feels she belongs.
